I know these aren't part of the 1,001 list, but I HIGHLY recommend the audio version of The Book Thief and The Secret Life of Bees. These are beautiful audio books, and will get you hooked! (Besides, you can listen to them while you are driving to school to pick your son up!)

Lyn,

I'm doing the A-Z title challenge, the 7 classics challenge, and the 50 books in a year challenge. All three of them work together nicely. It gives me a good mix of books, and it's a great way to find a book that I might not otherwise read. Later this year I will probably start the A-Z author challenge, and only let authors that I haven't read before count. :)

Which challenges are you doing?

970 I use the list as a way to find a new book... much like hunting for a new author or getting a recommendation from a friend. I have no desire to even try reading all of the books on the 1,001 list, it's just another way to find something to read when I can't decide what else to read.

970 This exact scene happens in The Story of Edgar Sawtelle: A Novel. Could that be the book?

970 Here's my list in no particular order:

Little Women
Les Miserables
House of Leaves (I believe this was on the older list)
Never Let Me Go (was on the older list...I think)
Pride and Prejudice
The Count of Monte Cristo (currently reading and loving it!)
The Great Gatsby
The Scarlet Letter
Grapes of Wrath
Hitchhiker's Guide

As I read more of the 1,001 list, I'm pretty sure that I will be changing this list.

While I agree with your must-read juvenile/ya novels, there are just too many others that could be added along with Wrinkle in Time, Narnia, Little House, etc. Although Pippi Longstocking is..."

Pippy Longstocking for the win! :) I can't wait to read those to my daughter!

970 Here are mine:

The Chronicles of Narnia
Shogun
The Princess Bride
A Wrinkle in time
Little House on the Prairie series

Even if a few of them are considered juvenile literature, they're still classic-type books that everyone should read. :)

970 Hi All!

I'm new here but would really love to take part in this. Quite a few of these books are ones that I'd like to read, but here are my votes:

Book of Illusions – Paul Auster
Cloudsplitter – Russell Banks
Persuasion – Jane Austen

Thanks!
