I will also have to pass, haven't been able to track down the book either. Will join you on the next read!

It's funny but when I was reading this it kept reminding me of a soap opera - like the the wife and lover in the hut or the cattiness of the wives. If this was written now, I would say it was all to "sell" the book. But in 1938?
I just put in a library request for Batouala. I have been a bit behind in my reading in general. Hoping to get back on track in August.
Muphyn,You can count me in on Ring of the Slave Prince - I am able to get a copy of it at my library.
I am a little over half way through. To be honest, I was a little bored at first, but then got into the grove of it and really like it now.
Hi all - I know that a couple of us are reading this, so I thought I would get a thread started for it. Thoughts? First impressions so far?
Katrina wrote: "Our library doesn't have either book. So I've ordered Cameroon with Egbert to read in June, I'm hoping to go back and catch up your other reads during the summer as I'm trying to read around Africa"Hi Katrina,
Same thing for me - the only book available at my library was Cameroon with Egbert. In a week or so, I will start a thread for it in the other books section - there might be others that are reading or have read it.

Of course when I was reading, I could think of all sorts of things to discuss - but when asked my mind just went blank :)Mainly I was just amazed at the will of the human spirit (I know that probably sounds cliche), especially when he is trapped with the others in the building. I don't want to go into detail because I know everyone isn't at that spot in the book yet. Basically the whole time I was reading, I guess I was just wondering if I would have the strength to do the things he did to survive. His courage and strength really just blew me away.

I understand, I am currently reading Out of Exile: Narratives from the Abducted and Displaced People of Sudan by Valentino Achak Deng. Will definitely need a break after this one.
Well, I just finished Little Bee by Chris Cleave. Essentially a British woman and young Nigerian girl meet on a beach one day in Nigeria and things happen...the story picks up two years later in present day England. Though sad at times, I enjoyed this one.Am just starting A Fraction of the Whole by Steve Toltz about a young man and his father's escapades in Australia.
I will probably skip this one for now too (started it, then misplaced it, renewed it the max amount of times at library, finally found it, now time to return it...).
Just finished Shake Hands with the Devil: The Failure of Humanity in Rwanda by Roméo Dallaire who was the commander of the UN Assistance in Rwanda. I would feel weird saying that I "enjoyed" reading it because the content is heartbreaking and extremely frustrating (particularly the political aspects). However, I am very glad I read it - I learned quite a bit that I didn't know.I am currently reading a thriller-esqe book, Beat the Reaper by Josh Bazell - I needed something light and fluffy.
