97 I had ordered it from AbeBooks and then my order got cancelled as the book wasn't it stock after all!! so unless I can find it somewhere else, I may have to pass it too. :(

97 Hi Jeffrey,

if you're willing to work on your French and give this book a go in French - wow, I'm impressed!! I won't get a chance to even begin it until mid-Dec (just too busy at work) but hopefully get around to it over Christmas.

97 Thanks Marieke - so if anyone's interested, we can always read another one (ie. one of the ones you suggest/have dug up). Great... Happy reading... (I first have to try and locate the book, not available in AUS...)

97 Sorry, I have really not been on top of things here... shall we (= you ;) ) read Joseph Brahim Seid's Told by Starlight in Chad in Nov/Dec then?

97 Thanks for your suggestion for Chad - it looks like it might be the only option.

I'll keep your idea for Comoros in mind (again, it's probably our only option :) ).

97 interesting! mine's a 1973 edition and new translation by Alexandre Mboukou. The introduction says that it rectified a lot of the earlier omissions and mistranslations.

97 Hello all,

I thought I'd kickstart the selection process for the next country: Chad! Any ideas & suggestions are most welcome - I'm having trouble finding anything (that's not in French and not totally obscure).

Only found a non-fiction book about elephants in Chad (no idea how interesting it is): Heinrich Oberjohann Komoon! Capturing the Chad Elephant. Lots of copies available on Abebooks.

97 Have just got the book from the library yesterday - hoping to have a read some time this weekend!

97 Thanks for posting the link!! that map is fantastic! Should help heaps with future book selections (and as a general book source!).
97 have been very busy with work these last few days (as per usual...) but i'm really hoping to get it AND finish it on the weekend! will post some more thoughts then.
97 I've only just started reading it but I'm already quite enchanted by the writing style! has anybody else read it/is reading it? thoughts?

Hi Rafiki,

sure thing but have a look in the Book Club Discussions 2009 (and also 2008) for books from countries already "visited". The subject line for the thread is the book discussed.
97 Fabulous!! I might actually get some of the reading done *in time* now! :)
97 How about we extend the current selection (Cape Verde) into August then? I'm still waiting for the Almeida book and haven't much progressed with the "Ring of the slave prince" yet. thoughts? (wrong thread, I realise. :) )
97 Marieke wrote: "I echo Andrea. It would be a bit less pressure since I read other books too. Also I've really enjoyed reading more than one selection per country. Should CAR be an august/September selection?"

yes, I think that would be a good idea! and as you all say, we can always have a couple of "optional" reads for those faster readers of us! :)

97 Marieke,
i finished it last night as well and like you, i had so much trouble getting into it! once i was half way through so it improved and i found it a much quicker read (uhm, listen).

will post some more thoughts asap.

yes, i'm wondering whether we should try out a two-monthly book club? i'm so struggling to read anything within that particular month and two months would just give me that extra bit of time.

what are other people's thought?
97 Marieke wrote: "I'll join in. I've been really sick with some kind of crud and am really behind but august is a few weeks away. Will try to catch up!"

oh, that's no good! :( just get better, don't worry about the reading... :) you can join in again for September or whenever you feel like it! :) take care.
97 Alrighty, the winner for August (based on three votes, haha :) ) is René Maran's Batouala.

Happy reading the three of us! (hoping others will join in too).
