Another thing I think people need to think about is the fact that a lot of things that we tend to think of as being part of post-apocalyptic society like; totalitarian regimes, rampant disease, food shortages, the constant threat of violence etc. is the way a huge number of people on the planet are living right now.
you might wanna check out "Battle Royale" it takes place in an alternate fascist Japan where once a year the government brings a class of high school students to an island and forces them to fight to the death.
as far as a real apocaplyse goes, I'd bet on going out with a wimper not a bang. fiction-wise "Parable of The Sower" is the distopia that seems to most realistic to me
The Handmaids tales isn't PA strictly speaking but is still good, also not sure if it would qualify as American or not. The Story is set in the US but the author Margaret Atwood is Canadian, and I think story while cleary feminist is also about typical Canadian fears and perceptions of the United States taken to an extreme.
I second Parable of the Sower/Parable of the Talents, it's totally plausible, it's not even that difficult to imagine.
I couldn't get into the Stand, I just can't get past Mother Abagail being a total "magical negro" character.
I finally got around to reading World War Z, and really liked it way more than I thought I would, I just started Brown Girl in the Ring, more of a distopian future than full-on apocalypse but so far so good.
I recomend Last Night, the world is going to end in a few hours and it follows how a few people in Toronto decide to spend their last day, very Canadian.
