I also liked Life as we knew it that Hrimceadle mentioned and there is a sequel I liked even more called The Dead and the Gone. Life as We Knew It takes place in a small town. The sequel is what life would be like in NYC under the same conditions.Hunger Games is another excellent YA book that any age would love I think. It is by Suzanne Collins and I added it to the booklist. The U.S., after wars and disease, consists of the capital in the Rockies and 12 districts. Each of these districts have to supply the capital with raw materials and once a year with a male and female youth to compete to the death against the youths from the other districts on TV in a survival show. The main character's younger sister is drawn in the lottery in the impoverished coal district to compete so the main character volunteers to go in her sister's place. Great book. I couldn't put it down and it is the first in a series.
It has been a while since I read it but apparently something with water currents causes a GIANT floating cesspool to form of the garbage that gets dumped into the ocean made up mostly non-biodegradable plastic. It is referred to as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch and is twice the size of Texas (it is a hard image to get out of my head)!!!! The author is hoping that sometime way in the future some amoeba or bacteria will evolve to digest plastic.
I REALLY loved this book. He touched on so many interesting issues and I really learned a lot. How about that huge floating garbage pile in the middle of the ocean?!?! Yikes!
