I also agree that the characters are hard to like with the exceptions of the prostitutes. I thought the book was good. A part of me felt as though her description of what happened to the father when he was a child and was caught by the two white men was written to give the father an excuse for what he did. As though that screwed him up in life.

She picked it up at the San Marino bookstore. They have used stuff for cheap prices. Last time I got a HC for the March by E.L. Doctorow for $3.
Stevens is obviously ashamed about working for Lord Darlington because of what Lord Darlington did during the war. A couple of times he avoids mentioning the fact that he worked for Lord Darlington. I see Stevens more as the population of Germans that lived near the concentrations camps that knew what was been done, but turned a blind eye because it did not disturb their day to day activities. It is interesting that when he has to fire the two Jewish maids he does it with out any question, yet later when he is talking to Mrs. K he agrees with her that he believes it was wrong to dismiss them for been Jewish. In this respect he is as guilty as Lord D. and lacks dignity for being an accomplice. He was in the mindset that what is being done is for the best if those that are in charge say so. Ignorance is bliss.

I definitely believe that Stevens father and Miss Kenton have more dignity than Stevens. He has a constant drive to be like his father and dignified and I think that he realizes that he lacks the dignity. By Stevens talking about dignity, I believe that he is trying to find something honorable about working for Lord Darlington. Stevens is always trying to emphasize on the importance of what is going on in the house with all of the conferences taking place. I think that he can see that Lord Darlington is wrong in what he is doing , so he needs to find the dignity in working for him.
As Stevens gives examples of what makes a great butler, he is tested when his father is dying. He does what his father thinks is right by staying downstairs and attending to his duties.

I would probably drive north for 2 days and then return. No specific place, just where the wind takes me. Assuming the wind is blowing north towards Oregon.
I know that with some of the other book groups the moderators post comments on the story lines and interesting thoughts about the book that others can comment on. I think that meeting up is fine, but not everyone can always make the meetings.
sorry, I mean comment. It gets a little annoying because you have to refresh all the time. It would be great though if it was easier to see all comments quickly.
I think that when you will be talking about the book you also set an online chat on the book at the same time. I think that those who can't make it can at least comment on the book.
I can't really remember all of the books that I read this year. Some of the best books that I read this year are:
1. The Soloist
2. Thousand Splendid Suns
3. No Country for Old Men
4. The Catcher in the Rye
5. Discovering Impressionism
6. Magic Study
1 & 2 are my top 2 picks this year. The rest are in no specific order.
I was having a hard time getting through the first chapter. I will keep powering through. It did remind me a bit of my youth growing up in East L.A. My mom use to take care of my 12 cousins and how we broke up into different groups depending on age.
