Welcome (27 new)
Mar 20, 2008 01:40PM

94 I just realized I never posted in the Welcome thread! Hi everyone! Anyways, I have a book suggestion. After seeing The Constant and thinking a little bit more about the kind of time travel Desmond was doing seemingly with his consciousness only, it reminded me of the book Time and Again by Jack Finney. In that book, the main character learns to travel through time just by thinking about it. He sort of mentally wills himself to be in a specific time and place and then he's there. It's been a few years since I read the book, but I remember that the main character ended up learning this by agreeing to become part of a secret experiment that was taking place in what appeared to be an abandoned factory in NYC. He is selected to travel to a specific time period (the 1800s) and trained to hypnotize himself to go there. The "company" is also training others to go to different time periods. They train by being put in environments identical to what they would see if they were actually in the time and place they're being sent to but he becomes adept enough to time travel from anywhere. Eventually the main character decides that the man who is running the experiments is evil and tries to stop him by changing the past. He also falls in love with a woman in the past and has to choose between living in his present or hers. Sorta reminds me of Desmond in that regard too. Anyway, just my two cents on another book that might fit for the show.
The Talisman (11 new)

94 I loved the Talisman. Black House, the sequel, not so much. I hadn't thought about that one and the show, but I know that in the first season there were a lot of characters that related to characters in The Stand. I believe the writers even addressed that at one point. (Maybe this has been talked about already, I still haven't caught up with all the posts!)

Jack's ability to slip back and forth between worlds does remind me of what Desmond is going through currently.

Just an aside on the book. Did you know that the journey Jack takes follows roads and places in the real world? I met someone once who went to several of the places on the east coast that are mentioned in the book!
The Constant (19 new)

94 Hi all, I'm new here! I've just started looking over the posts here and I'm fascinated. Love to see other people thinking like me and doing it so much better! I just wanted to add something to the comment about the Chronicles of Narnia and Charlotte Staples Lewis. There was an interesting article on EW.com that talks about Charlotte's first appearance on the island and the fourth book in the series Prince Caspian. It's here:

http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,20177008...

I'll just post the part about the book.

"I am utterly convinced Charlotte Staples Lewis has been to the Island before. Maybe it was her giggly delight as she splashed about in the Island's inland waters. True, the would-be freighter savior (or devil) could have been celebrating the mere fact that she had survived her harrowing arrival. But there was something more to her reaction — something that reminded me of another fantastical tale about an enchanted homecoming. The book is Prince Caspian, by C.S. Lewis, the sequel to The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. The story starts with a chapter called ''The Island,'' in which the Pevensie kids return to Narnia via a mysterious island marked by ancient ruins and odd creatures. First thing they do: play in the water."

I've only read the first two books in the series, but now I'm curious to go back and finish. Also the lost writers have admitted her name intentionally references C.S. Lewis.

My apologies if this has been discussed but I didn't see that specific book in the list.
