I agree!
Some people feel that only Asian arts should be called martial arts, and that boxing is a sport. I think it should be called a martial art; I have your way of thinking.
Skulduggery Pleasant series by Derek Landy...it's more children's fiction but there's a lot of martial arts involved. Derek Landy is black belt at this martial art that I can never remember the name :P
Some people argue that boxing is not a martial art, why not?
Martial arts can be brutal but it can also be very calming and the discipline, especially in karate, shows that it is a passive form of fighting, mainly using blocks, etc.

In England, most martial art schools send leaflets to leisure centres or sports centres; otherwise, you'll have to search the net or find out through word of mouth.
