I second the princess books by dawn cook and the tamora pierce ones. I re-read Tamora Pierce after having read them about 20 years ago and loved them just as much the 2nd time. kind of a different style but less known is Nina Kiriki Hoffman, one of my all time favorites. I'll have to try some others on this list. Another favorite that could match these somewhat are Patricia McKillip's books. And some of shannon hale (though I didn't like the book of 1000 days or princess academy so much).
I agree with you about the cover. I hate it when they use real people. Or make it look too YA. It's almost embarrassing to be seen reading it on the train (I'm 30, if that make a difference). I don't think the covers you found look like Yelena either. Another series that did this - the Shannon Hale series (Goose Girl, Enna Burning, River Secrets) also switched from beautiful cover art to ugly photos of real people, I don't know why they would do this.As for rating this as YA, at least it makes it easier for me to find the books I like, as they all tend to be YA, but this book has some pretty brutal bits - kind of in keeping with the violence level in Princess at Sea (by Dawn Cook) which is also YA, and no doubt many others, so it's not really surprising.
Thanks for inviting me to join. I was just browsing around Goodreads the other day wondering where the people were who like the books I like, and Poison Study has been my favorite book this summer. I just ordered the next two from Amazon.
