A more contemporary series with a great, well constructed female protagonist is the Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Biggs. I'll have to check out Graceling.

Hello! Loved Poison Study. I haven't gotten the time to read the rest, but I know I like her style.

I've recommended this book to others who are looking for a good, strong feminine character.
