Asian! So much my favourite that I have it divided up into countries. Had trouble finding one that I hadn't already read, but picked up The Street of a Thousand Blossomsat the library. Longish book, but a quick read with interesting charactera and great descriptions of sumo and Noh mask making. I only gave it 3 stars because it seemed somehow superficial, as if the story was secondary to the lessons in culture. Will definitely read more of this author, though.

Her first four paragraphs are devoted to kitchens, and they just keep recurring at important parts during the story.....
Just realised that Her Fearful Symmetryby Audrey Niffenegger also fits into this genre. I gave it 4 stars- entertaining, unusual, and quite different from the Time Traveller's Wife.
I read Dead Until Darkby Charlaine Harris. Having to find a paranormal book for this month seemed a good enough excuse to find out what all the hype was about, and I'm glad I did. Sadly now I will have to read the rest of the series, because it was entertaining and enjoyable! Am still not going to watch the tv series, though.

Thanks! I'll keep my eye out for it at the library.
I didn't realise until I finished it that this one counts too- Property.by Valerie Martin. It's about the damage slavery does to people; both the owners and the slaves themselves. Realistically portrayed and not a happy read.
I've just finished Snowflower and the Secret Fan and really enjoyed it. The author's restrained writing style really fits her subject matter, and brings the world of women in rural 18th Century China, with its many sorrows and customs that are strange to us, to life.
A bit late, I know, but am just back from holiday. I read Handle with Careand found it an entertaining holiday read, with another of Picoult's usual controversial issues as her theme.
29 books
274 shelves
Over and out from me, am off on holiday and away from the spreadsheet. Thanks to Slayermel for all the hard work. It's been fun!
Unless you also allowed author's surnames eg Iain Banks. I'm all for new challenges, personally I wouldn't do the shelf-a-thon again straight away.
