I read Cold Comfort Farm by Stella Gibbons and gave it 5 stars. I watched a movie adaptation of it years ago and liked it, and so have always wanted to read the book. I thought the book was much better though, lots of fun reading. : )
Hmm, I don't read too many books in the mystery/thriller genre, but I've always wanted to read The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco.
I read The Loved One by Evelyn Waugh and gave it three stars. It's a satire about love and death involving the two main characters who work in funeral parlors. I thought it would be a better read than it was, another book I didn't find the characters to be very interesting. Ah well.
I read Making Money by Terry Pratchett and gave it 3 stars. It was ok for a Discworld book, but I didn't really get into the characters. My favorites are the ones with Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg in them. : )
I read Wild Swans: Three Daughters of China by Jung Chang. (4 stars)
The book is an autobiography/biography of the author, her mother, and grandmother living in China from the 1920's - 1970's. I didn't know very much about China's history, especially the Communist aspect of it, so I found this book very informative reading. Many grim things happen in this book and it's amazing how people manage to survive such political turmoils.
So far I plan on reading...
The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster
Cold Comfort Farm by Stella Gibbons
Me Talk Pretty One Day by David Sedaris
Julie and Julia: 365 Days, 524 Recipes, 1 Tiny Apartment Kitchen by Julie Powell
The Loved One by Evelyn Waugh
Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut
Making Money by Terry Pratchett
Great category Photojim. I've had one of the Discworld books on my to-read pile for awhile. Now it will finally get read. : )
The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan (5 stars)
I've been meaning to read this book for years, ever since I saw the movie and loved it. The book was equally great. I'll definitley have to read more books by Amy Tan.
I read Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert and gave it four stars. Though I didn't really connect with the narrator I still enjoyed reading about her travels and her quest for a more spiritual life and self-knowledge.
The Mists of Avalon is one of my favorite books. It was originally a stand-alone book and the series got added on years later. I believe she had a co-author help her with the later books.
Lyn wrote: "Sunflower. Have you read The Samurai's Garden by her. It is her best IMO."
I read that a few months ago, a lovely read.
I didn't quite like the series at first because there are some liberties taken with the characters and plots from the books. But I ended up getting "hooked" and have watched seasons one and two and enjoyed them both. Looking forward to season three.
I read 20th Century Ghosts by Joe Hill and gave it 4 stars. It's a collection of his short stories, most are horror/supernatural though there's a few that aren't. I thought they were quite well-written and interesting.
I would say Neverwhere is for the adult reader, in the urban-fantasy genre. I'm not sure what types of books you like, but I hope you enjoy it.
