Thanks Mel, that's what I hear. I have been on the wait list for the first one at the library for about 4 months, then my sister gave me the first 7 for my birthday.
Jim - That is probably the best intro I have ever read! and BTW - one of my groups actually has a bookaholics thread, and we do introduce ourselves as you did above.
I just got the first 7 Sookie Stackhouse books, so I am about to start MY Sookie Stackhouse addiction.
I love this shelf. I can always use humor. My list:
The Princess Bride by William Goldman
Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency by Douglas Adams
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Seth Grahame-Smith
Humor is such a great choice Jim, and here I thought you were going to choose Harlequins,(Just kidding, lol) :)
Hey Luann, we are just OCD about this group. Can't wait to get started on the next shelf. Congrats photojim!!Arlene - I really enjoyed the Asia shelf. Thanks for picking it.
Arlene - I believe that you have to pick a shelf picker for December. We usually do that around the 20th of the month or so. I believe that you would use the names in the "Paranormal read for October" thread and pick someone who has not been a shelf picker before. You can find out from the mods if that is correct.
Meghan - I agree 100%. Do we know why it was translated to English from French and not Chinese. Was it ever written in Chinese?
I already have that book somewhere. I had it at Tahoe with me, but the bookbag it was in may have gotten moved into Joe's dorm room with his stuff. I think that is my next choice, though. I'll loan it to you when I am done. Just found the bookbag, so Street of A Thousand Blossoms it is.
Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress A Novel by Dai SijieI am hoping to finish it today. I have to agree with the majority. I am definitely glad to have read it, as it is an era/situation that I know almost nothing about. On the other hand, it does not have the beautiful lyrical style that I am used to from reading Gail Tsukiyama, Lisa See, or Amy Tan. That said, I will definitely be looking for additional reading on this subject. I think this book was a good place to start my exploration. I'm not sure I will be in a hurry to read anything else by this author, though. I give it 3 stars.
Now I need to decide whether I want to read Way of the Traitor, or The Street of a Thousand Blossoms next.

Linda wrote: "I have just finished "Geisha, A Life" by Mineko Iwasaki. This is a true story of one of Japan's star geisha until she retired at the age of 29. She trained to become a geisha from the age of 5. ..."This book sounds great. I really enjoyed Memoirs of a Geisha, so I would probably like this since it is on the same subject.
