Thanks for the welcome, Suzanne! I'm looking forward to getting back into the discussions around here and getting to know you!
I live just under two hours from Sherry, and we had hoped that same storm would give us snow, too; alas, it was only a cold rain. If I must be cold, I would like to watch pretty snow falling!
Thank you, Barbara! He is my sunshine! I never dreamed time would fly like this, though...it all happens too quickly!
Thank you, Ruth and Sherry! Actually, I haven't read Serena yet...I think it's under the Christmas tree! I'll return to the thread, catch up, and add something after I've read it. I am looking forward to this!
Hi, everybody! I'm back, and I've missed all of you! I was active (somewhat) about a year and a half ago. Then I had my baby, resigned my teaching position to be a stay-at-home mom, and got caught up in the joys of motherhood! It is a true joy, but I miss reading and discussing literature...Goodnight Moon isn't quite the same, is it? Anyway, I look forward to picking up the next book and getting involved once more. Happy reading!
Thanks so much everyone! I won't return to work until March, so I'm looking forward to getting to know Eli and getting into a routine that is manageable for all of us!
Thank you, Sherry, Dottie, and Lynn! He weighed four pounds, 14 ounces, and was 17 and 3/4 inches long. My health was the reason for the early delivery (preeclampsia), and he only needed to stay because he was a "lazy eater"; he had no other problems. He was back up to birth weight on Monday. My avatar is a picture of him right before we left the hospital.
Be glad I haven't figured out how to post pictures...we already have so many and I would gladly share them all!
My baby has arrived! Although five weeks early, he was able to come home on his one week birthday this past Monday after proving that he could eat all of his bottles at every feeding. His name is Eli, and he is a sweet, content, beautiful baby. Our family has been so blessed, and I appreciate all the thoughts and prayers.
Congratulations on the new son-in-law, Lynn! What a beautiful bride...and the cake was beautiful, too!
I saw a segment on CBS Sunday Morning with him at work. Very interesting...he uses a camera as well as his naked eye to get the right perspective.
Oh, I'm so jealous! I'm glad you all had such a wonderful time, and I regret that I wasn't able to come this year. It would have been so nice to meet more of you! Thanks for the pictures, Sherry and Jane. Absolutely gorgeous!
Hey, Wilhelmina! I just saw a few posts from you in other threads and wanted to see how "the rubble" is doing. Well, I wanted to see how you are doing and ask if the rubble is getting better :)
Fun story, Catherine! I had the same pleasurable experience with Ron Rash and his stories of my hometown.
Happy birthday Ruth and all other August birthdays! I'm sorry I'm late chiming in, but I hope the birthdays were grand!
I really enjoyed looking at the paintings you've posted, Ruth. That is so sweet of you to take the time to do that for "b-day" people.
Nope, I do it, too. When reading for pleasure, I only look it up if I can't figure it out from the context (very rarely does that happen). When I will be discussing the book, I keep a post-it note on the back cover and tear off little slivers for words to look up, quotes to remember, etc. I wish I could make myself stop and look up unfamiliar words more often (even if I can determine the meaning) for the pronunciation.
Jane, MST3K stands for Mystery Science Theater 3000. This was a show that was on Comedy Central (?) some years ago. Movies were shown to a small audience (wasn't there an alien?), and they would give commentary as they watched the movies. I only watched a few times, but I remember it was funny.
Wow, Sherry, you captured that perfectly! The imagery brought back memories of what it was like the last time I went to the dealership. Perfect!
Going back a few posts to Gail's comment...
I'm currently taking a class, Diagnosis and Remediation of Reading Difficulties. One quote from this week's reading really caught me by surprise. The author stated that word recognition begins at 26-28 months of age. That was shocking to me, although perhaps that's because I have had only sporadic exposure to kids that age. I knew that my nieces could "read" with me at a very early age, but I thought that was only because of repetition. And most kids recognize the golden arches, but is that really word recognition?
