A.J. wrote: "Shake Hands with the Devil is very good, but not easy to read."Not easy to read from an emotional perspective, or that it's just very dense? It's a much bigger book than I expected.
I had an excellent Christmas for books this year. I received:- A New Literary History of America
- How to Read Literature Like a Professor A Lively and Entertaining Guide to Reading Between the Lines
- How to Read Novels Like a Professor A Jaunty Exploration of the World's Favorite Literary Form
- Shake Hands with the Devil The Failure of Humanity in Rwanda
I also purchase for myself The Collected Works of Billy the Kid using all the Borders bucks that I racked up doing Christmas shopping in November.
And ... my husband got me a Sony Reader! I've already downloaded nearly 30 free books from feedbooks.com and purchased Shopaholic Takes Manhattan, Shopaholic Ties the Knot, and Holidays on Ice.

My husband and I are both excited to see it. It resembles a video game that we used to play called "Alice", which was a kind of return to Wonderland sort of game. We both loved playing it - he had it on his PC - but it's not compatible with newer OS's, so we can't play it anymore. Supposedly, they're going to come out with a sequel game but I'm not holding my breath.
Gabrielle wrote: "I like some Tim Burton films. I liked CORPSE BRIDE, but of course that was animated. Wasn't BIG FISH Tim Burton? I'm not sure, but I liked that one, too. And there have been others. I'll probably rent ALICE IN WONDERLAND. I don't know if I could convince Sebastien, my husband, to go to it even if I really, really wanted to. Maybe."
Oh, good. I thought you were totally turned off Tim Burton, and that would be a very sad thing. Yes, he did direct Big Fish, which is one of my favorite Tim Burton films. Some day I will get around to reading the book, which I think I bought at some point but have yet to read.
So many books, so little time!

No, Marian, it's something completely different. Check www.nanowrimo.org for more information.
Gabrielle wrote: "SWEENEY TODD was so bloody, it kind of turned me off Johnny Depp. I won't see another Tim Burton film, I know that. Have no desire to see ALICE IN WONDERLAND."Gabrielle, don't let Sweeney Todd turn you off of Tim Burton - it was bloody b/c of the nature of the source material. I've seen a number of Tim Burton films, and I can say that they don't even come close to Sweeney Todd in terms of gore.
I can't wait to see Alice in Wonderland. I was also looking forward to the video game (which seems to come out for every movie now), but unfortunately it won't be released for PS3.
On a related note, I finally got to see Pirate Radio, which I thought was fantastic! I know that it's been out for a while now, but I still wanted to add my endorsement.
I don't think that I've read anything that was actually published this year. But I came across this article that seems relevant to this conversation: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story... (The article title is The Best Debut Fiction in 2009.)
I wonder if anyone here has read any of the books on this list?

High five!

But ... WE WON!!!!
I can see it from here! I am only a mere few thousand from the finish line ... I can't wait to meet Zoe, Russ and all the other NaNoWriMos on the other side!
Gabrielle wrote: "Unfortunately for me, THE ROAD isn't showing in Columbus, Ohio yet and I'm in Columbus until after the Christmas and New Year's holidays. AMC did tell me they expect it to be playing in theatres h..."From my experience, the openings/showings depend on the theaters, not necessarily the size of the metro area.
I live in DC, where you would think movies would be showing in a number of places, but then a particular movie is only being shown on one screen in a single theater. It's weird.

Ruth, I get the impression that you would love anything incorporating oysters :)
My husband brined our Thanksgiving turkey this year, and this was the first time I've ever had turkey that was brined.Oh. My. God.
This was the best, most heavenly turkey I have ever tasted! I can't believe that so many people skip this or don't know about it. I will never eat another un-brined Thanksgiving turkey ever again. If my mother doesn't brine her turkey next year, I will just refuse to go to her house. It makes that big of a difference! I can't believe that I have been missing this for the first 30 years of my life! This turkey alone justifies my entire marriage. If anyone ever asks me, why did you marry Gordon? I'll say, the turkey. It was fantastic!

Ruth, your samples are perfect examples of "telling" vs. "showing".
I found this video online of Alton Brown showing how to brine meat:
http://www.hulu.com/watch/109111/good-ea...
He had an episode of Good Eats recently in which he explained why brining works, which was pretty easy to understand, but I wasn't able to find that clip. :(
