I second what Barbara says. Also, I think you'll find that quite a lot of groups aren't very active, and/or lack adult level conversation. :)
I'm looking forward to War and Peace too! I'd also like to request a summer reading of that one, if possible.:)
I love to read outside - though this doesn't happen much now that I have two little kids who would rather me play with them :)I love to read on my couch at night so I can relax and cuddle with my hubby or a good blanket. I'm also happy just reading anywhere - I'd pick time to read over the reading venue any day! I always take a book with me, even if I know I won't get to read. I'd hate to have time to read and no book to enjoy! :)
Sonya wrote: "It's amazing how a good reading (or a bad one) can make all the difference. I tried listening to "The Age of Innocence" a while back but couldn't get through it, the reading was so terrible. I'm ..."Thank you for the recommendations Sonya! I'm going to have to see if my library has Lolita and Pere Goriot for sure!
I'm kind of new to the idea of audio books, but I love them!I'm currently listening to The Book Thiefon cd. I love listening to books on my way to and from work. I can listen to music in the car sometimes, but I'm always up for an audio book! If anyone's considering listening to an audio book, here are my favorites so far:
The Book Thief
The Secret Life of Bees
A Thousand Splendid Suns
I'm on the hold list for The Portrait of a Lady, and have heard that it's really good. I've also heard a lot of good comments about Lian Hearn's Otori series on audio book. I've read the series, and would recommend it. :)
The farmer in the barn confused me... The first time he appeared I honestly wondered if I had skipped a page.
Molly - I had read a review of the story before reading the book and had heard about the Hamlet parallel. It was interesting to know about it before I started reading it. Knowing that the parallel existed made it pretty easy to figure out who was who, etc.
Then again, it probably did spoil part of the book for me.
I finished this book last week, and I'm still trying to figure out what I think of the book, so please forgive me for sounding so incredibly dumb at times. :)
Molly wrote: "I don't think the new owners would be able to do the sign - since when The Texan came to visit he commented about that I think - how he would never master the training they did - don't have the boo..."I totally agree! :)
I think that the death of Almondine had the biggest impact on me too. I loved Almondine, and loved her narrative. I wasn't overly surprised to see her die, but I didn't really think that would happen.I did love the idea of her and Edgar being soul mates, and the wonderful communication that they had.
Something else that stuck with me was the way Edgar signed the commands to the dogs. I wondered if the new owners would be or should have been taught the signs... that would have been neat.
I'd like to know what everyone thought of the ending...I enjoyed most of the book, but the ending lost me. I felt like I stuck it out through some dry patches to be disappointed. It's not that I was looking for a Disney ending... but I really wanted Edgar to get to reunite with a real Almondine.
Molly wrote: "Al, I'm with you. I have not ever read any Tolstoy and know nothing about Anna Karenina. I love diving into a book with no prior knowledge of what is in store for me. I am trying to wrap up Edga..."I'm pretty much in the exact same boat Molly! The edition that I have in the B&N one. I'm hoping that's right. If not, I might stop by the public library to see what they have. I just finished up Edgar Sawtelle, and am trying to finish up The Count of Monte Cristo so that I can dive into Anna Karenina this week.
I recently read A Pebble To Polish, which was given to me for being the 1,000th CR member. Janet had mentioned that the names of her characters had a deeper meaning. Janet, would you mind explaining them? I'd also love to hear more about what drove you to write the book! :)
Thanks!
I should be able to do this with no problem. The only real reason that I watch any TV is for the news or weather. If for some reason the weather is nasty I would need to break the no TV thing for the news as this is where school cancellations are posted. :)I couldn't do a week without internet as part of my job is based on internet work and updating my work website.
Hi All,I just want to say a few things:
-I love this selection of books, and I can't wait to read and discuss them!
-It's so wonderful that the list goes so far into the future.
Thanks!
My Santa's were very good to me and my family! I got The Diary of Lady Murasaki, Out: A Novel, The Three Musketeers, the Little House on the Prairie series (I can't wait to read these with my daughter!), The Story of Edgar Sawtelle (to read for CR in January!), The Man in the Iron Mask, Nineteen Minutes, and Different Seasons. Wow! I have a lot of reading to do! :)
