Yes good advice Dave.

Take note, Bill - that a lot of women like to read about great loves of which Tristan and Isolde is one even if they don't want to live that great love themselves. They want to get away from ..."
I agree Laurel ... I think a lot of men like to read such stories also, that's why I wrote it. As to less wars, the story fixed that problem also. If only reality mirrored fiction in some cases.

Your book, Twilight of Avalon sounds a great read, Anne. I wondered if for a moment you had forgotten Isolde's great love, Tristan, but I see he is in there. I hope their love for e..."
Not always tragedy Laurel:
“Nothing is forever Aris. Even LifExtend cannot supply a reason to live. Which means that our duties are not forever either … I have not forgotten that beach on Risna my love. Soon we will get away for a good while.”Fe Fi FOE Comes
She smiled at him. “My love for you is forever Vavan. I have never felt any other way about you. I knew I loved you when I was younger than Liberty. People will be talking about it a million years from now.”
He got up, pulled her up, and held her close to him. “Let’s go to bed. I want to make love with you.”
Sorry ... couldn't resist.

Good advice ... of course that would keep your wife really busy reading everyone's books out loud!
Some wrote me that I have too many strong female leads in the book ... too pretty and too smart. I guess they liked the James Bond series.
Dave wrote: "It's not mine, I get paid to edit these days. Odd, the one thing I really don't like doing with my own work is something I'm quite good at for others. I'm also doing layouts for children's books, n..."
Yes but after a professional proof reader (mine) proofs the manuscript you still have to read through it word by word. Sometimes they do not understand what your point was.
I think new books and new authors should be part of the new 'Stimulus Packages'. The govt should buy a copy of everyone's book to send to everyone everywhere on the planet. This would help alot!
Everyone has read my book Fe Fi FOE Comes by now ... yes?
(jest kidding)
Dave wrote: "I don't really have time to read for pleasure these days. Does the romance I'm editing count? "
I hope so. I'm proofing the next edition of my book, and it is painstaking to check every word, headers and footers, chapter page numbers, and on and on and on ...
Yes Debbie ... I write 'behind the scenes' so to speak with technical non-fiction. It pays pretty well, but it isn't the same thing as being a bestselling author ... but mostly bestselling authors are those that are promoted by the mainstream presses and bookstores.
Yeah that's sort of the message Andy. If you look at contempory bestsellers and even contemporary music you find much 'sameness' to it ... this is on purpose ... because it sells. That's what 'massmarket' is all about ... mostly people doing pretty much the same thing because mostly people pretty much buy the same thing.
Okay I know you've heard me say this before, but Ebay US & Ebay UK are good places to promote/sell your books. You have pages to compose your ad ... describe your book. You get hits and name recognition. 2nd chance sales, and so on. It is among the best of the marketing tools. I've sold every book I've put up, and usually for more than the price on Amazon & Alibris.

You have to be a little crazy to be a writer. We can't all be Brittany Spears and sing the same songs. lol

You're right Debbi. After all is said and done, your writing will live on. Maybe only your children and your children's children will read it ... but transmitting your dreams is the one thing thing that you can do ... those who do not have really nothing to leave behind.

Rae,
I think everyone goes through that when you're doing creative work ... sometimes you have to walk away from it and just do some thinking (at least I do).
Heinlein said it best .... not quoting but he thought about giving it up and retiring, but then he thought up an idea for another story ... you never stop being a writer!

I don't think you can worry about what others are doing. I wish anyone who has the self motivation to write luck. Like I said many people, even those close to me, said it was a waste of time ... well once you publish and someone reads it and enjoys it you are an AUTHOR.
My own 'waste of time' has already sold a few hundred copies, and many that have read it have remarked on how it explains the 'upsidedown - backwardness' of the current way we do things. They tell me they see/hear the headlines differently now. That's enough for me to claim (modest) success!

Yes well it RAINED here in Italy! What rip-off! I'm gonna write the Pope I think ... this is ridiculous to have it RAIN when you come here!!
When my career takes off I'm going with it!

I'm in Italy on the Med this week. Horrible place (he he he) but gee I guess I gotta do it!
but the pollen is HORRIBLE everybody is sneezing and such!
You're right Renee ... your goals have to be realistic, but you can't give up on them. I can't tell you the number of people who told me I was wasting my time writing my book ... now few days go by that someone from somewhere in the world doesn't tell me how much they enjoy the story.
What if I had just given up?

It can't hurt Ivy. I looked and looked for a good place to advertise and Ebay came out best because you're willing to sell what you advertise.
Best of luck!
biLL
No I list them Ivy. It's fairly cheap, and you can put lots of excerpts - reviews - and notes up. I sell every book and like the UK ad running now it has had over 120 hits so you get name recognition. Also there's the 2nd chance sale ... if someone bids but doesn't win then you can sell it to them for their high bid. I sell a few that way too.
All the bestsellers are up on Ebay too you know. Many never get a bid.
When I first started it cost more (not much) than I made, but now I break even or do a little better, and I've had more sales on Amazon and Alibris because I wait to relist for a few days.
The point is to get your title out there in the public ... so when people hear it they know they've seen it somewhere.
The market is a little slower now with the recession deal ... but my books still sell ..TTL!
