It's the UK equivalent of Chapitre: the largest bookshop in Britain.

8322 Actors are supposed to say, of critics, "It doesn't matter what they say about you, as long as they spell your name right". How true that is, even today.

Hi Kate,

I had a look at the synopsis and it looks most interesting. I've put it on my to read list. I like the idea of "negotiating" identity, for identity (or status or whatever) develops over time and takes at least two people, but usually more.

We have something else in common, for I too have an interest in May Queens. For the last year, I have been chairing the committee that organizes the local May Day event in our little town. So I spent the recent May festival showing the mayor and the May Queen around the festival. We had maypole dancers too, our town being the only one in Ireland with a maypole still standing,

I had a look at the synopsis of your novel. I fear that our little event is a bit tamer than what your book portrays. This is just as well, perhaps, at least, while I am still chairman - - -.

All the best

8322 The same idea, but a different sentiment.

Insecurity just has to be endemic among authors. Give us a chance to look down on other authors and some of us will seize it. It says more about the person who does the despising than about the person who is despised - - -

Once upon a time, self-publishing was spoken of sniffily as something done only by second-rate authors who could not get themselves a "real publisher". There was some sense in this attitude in the distant past, since books published in this manner were almost always read only by the author's friends.

You will still find people who adopt this same sniffy attitude. However, times have radically changed. Computerised technology means that authors can now publish their own work much more easily, and if they work hard and are lucky, they can get themselves as well-known as if they had been published by an established publisher. For example, a friend of mine published a couple of academic texts herself and they are recognized in the field to be first rate.

8322 Your trailors are all astonishing. Technically not too demanding either. I too was impressed by Claddagh's whose subject-matter grabs the viewer by the throat. But all are splendid, giving food for thought.

8322 Hello everybody. My name is Tony Buckley. I am an anthropologist who worked for thirty years in a museum concerned with the lives of Northern Irish people. Before that, I studied traditional medicine in Nigeria. I have in principle retired, but I keep putting pen to paper (hand to computer)writing the occasional article. There is a book in preparation, but I don’t yet know what it’s about.
