822 I'll see how it goes, but I think I'll try to do better about finishing current books before moving onto new ones. At any one time I seem to have about 15 books on my currently reading list, because I tend to go all "ooh, shiny" as soon as I buy new ones.

822 I only put books on my to-be-read list when I've bought them and brought them home, and I've started to even do not so much of that. I have growing to-be-read piles, but it's hard when you go to the bookstore every week and there are all those shiny new books. And they make puppy eyes and wag their little tails at you.

I looked at the entire 1001 books to read before you die list too and counted something like 70 odd of the books that I had read. It's lucky for me that there were a fair number of Margaret Atwood's novels, Austen and Bronte sisters, a few Douglas Adams, and Dorothy Sayers and Agatha Christie because those few authors comprised the majority my book count. Still, I'm okay with that. A lot of books on the list I'm not all that interested in reading.

822 I didn't really set a goal for 2008. Like Ealaindraoi, it's actually progress for me to keep track of what I'm reading.

Looking back at my list, so far this year, I've read 22 books. What I've noticed in the last year or so, is that I'm leaning way more towards reading non-fiction than in the past. I tend towards reading in a particular subject area for a while and then move on to a different one. Also, I seem at any one time to be in the middle of what seems to be a freakishly large number of books, some of which I'm more actively reading than others.

This is not helped by the fact that a bookstore near to my workplce is having its annual sale where they sell, and hardcovers are selling 2 for $5.99 and softcovers 2 for $3.99. This includes quite a few books in hardcover that have not yet been published in softcover, and certainly books that have not yet been "remaindered". Both my spirit and flesh are weak, and the "to be read" pile also continues to grow. I haven't even added most of them to my "to be read" list here yet!

822 I buy rather than borrow from the library. I buy most of mine from Chapters/Indigo, the Canadian equivalent of Barnes & Noble. Others I buy from independent booksellers, university bookstore, "super stores" or drugstores.

822 Just wanted to say that I tried to track down a copy locally of The Grenadillo Box, and didn't have any luck. Oddly, even the library didn't have it. I'll catch up with the next group read, though.
822 For me it depends on the similarity of taste between the other reader and me. If we have very similar tastes and perspectives, it would have an influence on how quickly I would get around to reading the book; if we don't, it likely won't make any difference.

822 The Grenadillo Box looks interesting to me. I'll see if I can track down a copy.

822 I'd be interested as well. In non-fiction, I'd be interested in something: historical - European would work for me, or ancient history; biographial; or in the science area. Generally, I'm not reading much fiction these days, but would be okay with something in the thriller, suspense or mystery areas.

822 Hello all! I've just joined up after reading the January thread at the SDMB. I decided I might as well use the same name in both places. Having read a lot of books recommended by Dopers in the past, I thought I'd come hang out here as well.
