I just finished the book. I'm enjoyed it, although I'm interested to see what others think. It certainly isn't a masterpiece or anything, but I thought it was pretty fun. Best of all, it has inspired me to pick up Jane Eyre, which has sat on my shelves collecting dust for more than a decade.

Just finished the book tonight and I must say, I really enjoyed it. The writing was witty and the characters were enjoyable, but beyond that, what I loved the most was the historical perspective the book offered.I've read a lot about the battle and the internment camps of WWII, but I haven't really read a lot about the after effects. I love how the author was able to convey that sense of optimism that was prevalent during the era, all the while showing the crushing losses to these peoples lives. This is an entire generation whose dreams were torn away and discarded.
I wonder if the members of Jonas's community could even be considered human. Our ability to choose right from wrong and feel real emotions are what makes our humanity. Without agency, we are just animals. Is Jonas's father evil? I don't believe he has the capacity for good or evil, just like a lion or a bear can't truly be evil.

I wanted to nominate The Stranger by Albert Camus. This is one of my all time favorite classics and clocks in at 123 pages.
I just finished the book tonight. I really enjoyed it. It really made me think about humanity's quest for peace on Earth. What price would we be willing to pay to bring an end to war and poverty and suffering? I look at Lowry's Utopian society and my initial reaction is one of horror. But then I think about Lily's experience with the boy from the other community and wonder if I'm judging to harshly. They would probably look at our society and all it's problems with disgust as well.
Interesting stuff. I'm interested in hearing everyone else's feedback.
I'm always a fan of the super random categories. Like books featuring an inanimate object as a main character. Or books you hated in high school but would love now. Or books you could finish in a day.
