Yes, I know what you mean. Living in the city now, I have come to depend on Walgreen's on the corner, Fry's at the next corner, and so on. When we are in Illinois at my mom's, it is 7 miles to town so you have to make sure you get everything you need while you're in town! And the same people all the time means everyone knows everything about your life! It is very different.

I recently joined Paperback Swap and noticed "Woodswoman" while browsing. I so enjoyed her first book and am anxiously waiting to read the next one! Anne's dedication to nature and conservation is just inspiring. As a country girl who has been transplanted to the city, a cabin in the middle of the woods sounds particularly good! Thanks for your reply and I look forward to hearing from others in your area!

I recently read Anne LaBastille's first Woodswoman book Woodswoman I Living Alone in the Adirondack Wilderness and find her to be an inspiration. For a brief biography see:

As I have been reading all I can about Anne and her life, I find that it was a common occurrence for her to be in Glen Falls at book signings, etc. I wonder if any members of this group have had the pleasure of meeting her. I am also very curious about her present condition. She was born in 1935 so would now be about 75 years old. One site reported that she is now in a nursing home suffering from Alzheimer's. I find this to be so tragic for such a health conscious, inspirational woman. Does anyone know if this report is true?
Jim, Glad to hear you are surviving. Good wishes and prayers have been said for you from here in Arizona. Keep your chin up, don't make yourself sick from lack of sleep, and remember Spring is really just around the corner! :)
Ah, just checking on the progress of Amber and the puppies and am sad to hear the news! I bet she's home by now as this was a couple days ago when she was still at vet. Do you have any pictures of Amber or your other animals Jim?
Jim, I am anxiously waiting for word from you on your puppies! Checked my email this morning; saw an update on the discussion and thought puppies!! Hope they come soon.

Thanks Joy for sharing the doggie pics and quotes, loved it! Jim what kind of dog is Amber? You'll have to keep us informed on her 'puppy' progress! I have come to the conclusion that our little pekingese Abby that we got last April needs to meet with Caesar, The Dog Whisperer! She has issues with doors! Yes, you heard right, doors! She barks her little head off when you open, close, touch the door. Used to only be the outside doors; now she is progressing to inside doors! I say it's because it makes her mad that she's not big enough or that she can't open them herself ie she's not a person (really upsets her!).

Thanks Joy for this discussion! What a fitting gift for Michelle Obama to present Laura Bush! Ahhh... :)
Truly enjoyed reading through this discussion.
I was raised on a farm, come from a family of farmers, and am still just "a country girl at heart" even though we now live in Phoenix. Some of my best memories from childhood are horseback riding with my cousin and friends. Had several ponies when I was little and they can be truly onry! I remember being all dressed to go to a birthday party and a pony we had just gotten, got out of the pasture. We chased that silly thing forever, through the cornfields, etc! I remember always feeding the ponies sugar cubes which they loved!
Through the years we have raised several 'wild' animals who were orphaned or something. I raised two baby fawns when my boys were little. One was orphaned when it's mother was hit by a car; the other was found swimming in a lake and boaters picked it up out of the water and brought it to the office where I was the manager. They should have left it alone because then they couldn't remember exactly where it was they picked it up at. So I raised that one too.
Raised a wild baby bunny after the dog rustled up a nest and killed all the rest of them. I remember Daddy saying, it will never live. By golly it sure did live, though it never tamed down much and we released it on Easter Sunday which was very memorable!
My granddaughter who is 3 now lives on the farm with her parents right next to my mother. She is always excited to go see 'Bridget' a miniature horse that my cousin has! Give her a few years and her MiMi (me!) will get a pony for her too!
Thanks for bringing back wonderful memories!
This morning (11-26) it is raining! Rain in Phoenix is something we don't get very often, so I always enjoy it.
That is great! Can I ask how do you place the picture and link to the book on your discussions? I have never figured that out!
