I just finished part 2 and am still really enjoying it. I've read The Yiddish Policeman's journal and enjoyed it as well, but so far I like The Adventures of Kavalier and Clay better.
Dini wrote: "Rebecca, I haven't read Into Thin Air, but I was blown away by another book by the same author, Into The Wild. "Thanks Dini - I have Under the Banner of Heavan on my to read list, but not Into the Wild - I will add it!
Here are a few of my favorites that I've read over the last couple of years. I've recently been trying to read at least one non-fiction book per month. It has been really interesting.
1) Under and Alone The True Story of the Undercover Agent Who Infiltrated America's Most Violent Outlaw Motorcycle Gang, by William Queen
2) The Glass Castle A Memoir, by Jeannette Wells
3) Eat, Pray, Love One Woman's Search for Everything Across Italy, India and Indonesia, by Elizabeth Gilbert
4)Hooked Pirates, Poaching, and the Perfect Fish, by Bruce Knecht
5) The Year of Living Biblically One Man's Humble Quest to Follow the Bible As Literally As Possible, by AJ Jacobs
6) A Long Way Gone Memoirs of a Boy Soldier, by Ishmael Beah
7) Gang Leader for a Day, by Sudhir Venkatesh
8) Into Thin Air A Personal Account of the Mt. Everest Disaster by Jon Krakauer
Has anyone read these? If so, any suggestions for me on others I'd like?
I also read The Secret Life of Bees a few years back and only remember that I really enjoyed it and was excited when The Mermaid Chair came out. The Mermaid Chair was a total dissapointment to me. It's on my worst book list!
Rebecca - I totally missed it. I was so intent on trying to remember which letters were not supposed to be used and making sure I caught those, that I didn't even notice the sentance when it was first presented. I have been wanting to try to come up with my own sentence trying to use the least letters possible, but I haven't attempted it yet. Has anyone sat down to do this?
I like it too. I've only watched it online. One day I was home with my son and watched all the episodes and now I watch it whenever I notice a new one online.
I had expected Finny to be dead when he fell on the stairs, but then he just broke his leg again, so I was surprised when he died after that.
I just finished watching the pilot. I really like it. I haven't gotten attached to a show in a long time. I'm still finishing up watching GG on DVD, but I can see myself watching this one too.
I've been going back and forth in my mind to decide if I think Finney and Gene are ever really best friends. They have a complex relationship and as Alison stated there's a lot of emphasis on that relationship. I find myself liking and disliking both characters at different times. Once again, this is a book I wouldn't have picked up had I not been apart of this group and once again I am enjoying myself reading and discussing it.
1. The Catcher in the Rye and The Bell Jar
2. One Flew Over the Cukoo's Nest and Icy Sparks
3. Daisy Miller and Madame Bovary
I like the Meghan's idea a lot too. I'd love to read some of the longer books on the list with everyone.
