758 Not to come off school-marn but what if the main Rory list was used and read in the order in which they are first read/mentioned in the episodes of the show? No nominations needed and no calculation of votes needed -- those who have already read a book or who haven't the time for a particular book can participate or not and those who have not previously read it likewise -- let's say if this began in January -- the first book on the list by episodes would be that month's book -- the discussion takes place or a thread is provided for it -- see who jumps in or see how that month goes. Just a thought.

If the next book on the episode by epsiode list is one we've read -- just go to the next one which we haven't read as yet. I have read a lot of these and I found myself nominating the same two or three most attracting me to read them over and over and usually they would not be the chosen book. BUT I did also read a few that I'd never have done otherwise. I really think sticking to that set list until those titles have been addressed first is truer to the group's being based on the series.

758 Oh, Jenny -- I didn't mean you had offended me -- or anyone -- I just giggled and it wasn't even that I thought you needed to reword or puctuate differently -- it just made me giggle as I said.

Thanks, Dini, I figured the discussions would be finished out through the year end but it also seemed a bit confusing.

758 Well -- Gilmore Girls is hardly an unrelated topic, Jenny, given the group is based on a character in the series and books read by the character and mentioned in the series were the basis for book selections which we wanted to discuss -- so you gave me a giggle there. BUT -- I was wondering -- as far as the selections which have been voted in for the remainder of this year -- the discussions WILL take place, wil;l they not? It would look VERY odd to have selections nominated and voted in and then NOT hold these remaining discussions, in my opinion.

Moderators please clarify and make adjustments if need be -- I hope the established selections will be discussed before we go to the more free form discussion option.

758 Check the shelves of this group -- directly based on the book lists from the series -- plus a few additional titles. And in back posts there are links galore to all sorts of Rory book lists though the one above is a good one -- improved since it first appeared.

758 I noticed several that repeated but at least it's closer to complete than the list I lost. Thanks again for sharing it.

758 Oh thank you -- this is much more than I had in the previous list.

758 Lori -- could you post a link to that list -- I used to have a similar though incomplete list but I lost it. If not a link then maybe e-mail a document if someone else also wants this. Thanks -- just asking so don't feel obligated to do a lot of typing if you would rather not, okay?

758 My own reaction is -- not a sequel. BUT -- there are so many, many versions which have been done of the Phantom story. Can one more really damage the best of them?

Secondarily -- immediately I was thinking of the comparison which might be made between the Coney Island Phantom and the quirky film Phantom of the Paradise. Have any of you seen that version? It's the phantom tale mixed with Faustian elements and is absolutely wonderful in my opinion.

Michele, can you please post a link to that BBC list? I've seen you mention it a few times now --where is it?

I'm in the 1001 group here and rarely active -- I'm not goiong to read all of those either -- but I did find a great Brazilian writer by one of my conversations there. I take lists and merge them -- more like my own ever expanding list -- and then there are all the other books I keep adding to the shelves so I won't forget titles, etc. I'll never get done reading -- but that's why I'm here and why I've been in Constant Reader online for over a decade. It's a healthy illness. Reading as oxymoron, in other words.

758 Katie -- welcome. You will have plenty of fun with Gilmore Girls and books and other topics with this group. Poke through some of the older threads when you find time -- and comment on anything or start a new conversation.

758 So glad to hear the enjoyment of 84,Charing Cross Road spreading here! I've been thinking I need to watch the film again as I haven't seen it for many, many years. There's always the chance it will pop up on the channels which we've discovered on the HD set-up because I've already seen a number of old black and white films.

758 Hee-hee -- that's good to know! What a lovely place to go for relaxation.

758 Lori -- I think in your place of the moment, my thought would be to concentrate on Anna Karenina and read it most frequently and use each of the others you are currently wanting to read as the alternate book for taking breaks from AK -- when one alternate is finished then take the next one. I would think that AK would get finished before you had finished all of the alternate books. then you can polish off the remaining shorter ones before starting the next huge read -- is War and Peace up next after Anna Karenina?

758 Anna -- put down the book -- go outside -- take some deep breaths. That's fresh air. Just kidding -- well, sort of -- 101 books is astounding to me and I consider myself even now enough of a bookworm. I'm impressed.

758 Kristel -- he became very fluent in Dutch while we were there while I fell away on the lessons and behind on my progress though I was doing very nicely for a while. He has kept it in practice by reading novels in Dutch as well as reading the Belgian/Dutch newspaper websites and he has even communicated with a couple of the columnists by e-mail when they were addressing topics such as the huge wildfires here in CA.

758 It's Het verdriet van Belgiƫ roman, Kristel. He's been reading it for a long time. He is keeping his Dutch sharp -- looking up words, etc. He has more time to read it now than he did for a long w hile when he was still working. Semi-retirement does have its good points. ;)

758 Bingo -- OOPS -- not actually. The girls in Little Women had played out Pilgrim's Progress when they were younger. In real life the Alcott father had used TPP as a basis for life lessons. The books given to the girls under their pillows were New Testaments.

Ssome of the chapter titles in Little Women are taken from The Pilgrim's Progress -- including one titled Vanity Fair -- wasn't there? And I should truly be blushing given this statement! I should know given how well I know the book but my mind is blanking on it. Obviously there was a huge gaping hole not just a missing chapter title as I completely missed the reference of Shannon's question being to the Testaments under the pillows! Sorry for my confusing response there.

758 Heh- I love it. Simply more proof of what we've just said, in my opinion.

758 I've not only been reading lately but reviving another pastime which I enjoyed doing over the years but haven't done for two decades or so -- crocheting.

Today was WWKIP Day -- World Wide Knit in Public Day according to some and so I took my crochet project along and Husband and I sat having coffee -- I crocheted and he read some more in his Dutch book (he's around three-quarters of the way through it now).

Kristel will recognize this classic, I'm sure. I have it in Ennglish and will likely read the two side by side one day to get a feel of the Dutch but move along better by using the translation.

Anyway -- I'm trying posting a photo in a post for the very first time here -- hope I can get it done correctly without a million attempts.

Hmm -- maybe not. Back in a moment.

This link works but it isn't what I was aiming to do. I'll have to practice some or ask questions. Ah well -- I'm good for the time being -- just so the pic is visible.

758 Heh -- Hakendover figures heavily in our timing for a return visit -- we would dearly love to see the Paasmaandag Procession and the horses thundering around the hilltop field once again. So many of our wonderful experiences came about through those Belgian folks with whom we became acquainted more closely as my husband's colleagues certainly were good to us in allowing us to participate in the real life of the area. Not only this Easter event but attending the local fanfaren's concerts and simply observing and listening to the community involved in their routine gatherings. I get truly homesick for our little Belgie corner every now and again.
