Courtney, I'm a little confused about your complaint that there is too much discussion about what books should be read. You said:
Could we have a group discussion/dialog/debate about adding these extra books to the list? I thought the point was to read the books Rory read and not every literary reference in the entire series.
I am not a fan of expanding the pool to include books they mocked or those read by other characters until we get through the seriously wonderful, challenging and enriching books Rory read.
I for one have not witnessed anyone "pointing out every misshelved book." I was merely pointing out that the books I have suggested ARE books Rory read, and that the original list contains many of the books you are saying you're not interested in reading. Originally when I suggested another shelf I did not intend for Michele or anyone else to re-shelve every book already on the list, but to possibly add a new shelf for new books seen on the show if the mods wanted those books to be separate from the original list. Others have expressed an interest in keeping track of all the books on the show, even if we were not going to read them together.
Aside from the very first month (October 2007) we have never had a "closed universe" of books. In November we read The Time Machine which was not on the list. In December we read A Christmas Carol which was not on the list. In January we read Northanger Abbey which was not on the list. In February we read The Eyre Affair which was not on the list. There have only been three or four months in which both books we read appeared on the original list.
Furthermore, when we originally decided to read two books a month, it was so that we could compare and contrast them. I believe that is also why it was decided that the companion book didn't have to be on the list; so that we'd have more opportunity for comparison. This has not happened over the past few months (even though Alison started a thread last month, few people commented). Personally, I don't see the point in reading two books a month if we're not going to compare and contrast.
Good luck quitting smoking. I know firsthand how difficult that can be.
Okay, here's the thing, and forgive me if I'm not clear because I haven't had any coffee yet this morning:
1. The original, official, WB "List of Bests" list contains not only books Rory read but also books that were mocked by Lorelai, read by other characters (like Jess), and simply referenced. Some of the references were to a specific character, not the book itself, so it could be argued that those references were to the movie and not to the book. However, obviously, not ALL the references made it to the WB's list.
2. The last two books I requested to be added to the list were books I actually saw Rory reading in rerun episodes. I referenced the season, episode title, and scene.
If the true intention is to only read books that Rory read, I suggest someone go through the seasons and write them down while watching the SHOW, not using the WB's list, which as I said contains other books. I have a feeling that the list, sans references and Jess books, would be quite a bit shorter than it actually is now. I also suggest that the companion books no longer be permitted to be off of the list.
Perhaps Shannon, who started this group, could chime in here and let us know what her original intention was?
Sera, that is why we get along so well! Ha!
My other favorite book is one I discovered through this group: A Tree Grows in Brooklyn.
Courtney, your floating thing sounds like fun. But I live in a city with 2 major rivers (The American and the Sacramento) and every single year there are multiple drowning deaths from people boating and drinking. So please be careful!!
Courtney, you sooooo belong in San Francisco!! I think you'd love it there.
Robbie and Shaindel, my idea of camping is in a cabin with real beds, real bathrooms with flushing toilets and hot showers, and a kitchen. Maybe even a nice rug in front of a roaring fireplace (hey, you can still roast marshmallows!). But even then I don't love it, because I hate bugs. In jr. high and high school I went camping with my youth group every year. We slept on the hard, rocky ground in tents and had to use the stinkiest, nastiest outhouse (at least it wasn't just a bush). I only went for the water skiing. But those 6 years gave me my FILL of roughing it.
Back on topic: one of the local radio stations does a summer music festival every year. This year the headliner is Daughtry. They haven't announced the other bands yet, but I may go. Tickets are only $25!!

How COULD a movie do justice to a 1500 page book? I've heard it's pretty close to the abridged version, though.
Oh, Kathy, I didn't see your post. I would agree with Dottie, do NOT see the film before you see the series. There is no character development in the film, because the characters were already developed.
And I don't think the book is at all what the series is. There are many references in season 1, but for the most part, it's very different.
So, Meghan and I met Michele over the weekend. We all went to San Francisco for my birthday. A fun time was had by all!
Um, can I just say... I always thought Shia was funny but I never realized how cute he is until I saw the cover of this month's GQ magazine... YOWZA!!!
I loved the Sex and the City movie!! There were some "oh, yeah, right. As if" moments, but for the most part I liked it.
At first I thought that Richard didn't age, but now I think he's just time traveling.
I think what Sawyer asked Kate had something to do with that woman he conned. Didn't he father a child with her?
Did Jack ever tell Kate that Aaron is his nephew?
Meghan had a really good theory about Christian and Jack. Jack was never supposed to be on the island, and that's why (1) he was able to get sick on an island that heals, and (2) he couldn't get back to the island when he wanted to. Jack was only on the plane to bring Christian's body back. So it wasn't Jack that was meant to be there, it was Christian.
Whoa, Heather!! Are you going to keep your name as Arctic? That's a BIG difference! I lived in Raleigh NC for 2 years and loved it there.
EDIT: OOOOHHH. For some reason I read this as you were MOVING to North Carolina. I think because I read in another thread that you were moving... Hee, silly me!
So, no sooner do Meghan and her husband get here that I put them to work!! They are currently making me dinner! Ha ha. The sucky thing is, I am sick. So I don't have a ton of energy to do all the stuff we planned. Please cross your fingers that I get better before my birthday on Saturday! Also we're going wine tasting on Wednesday and it's no fun wine tasting while sick!
