I am glad that we are continuing monthly discussions, simply because I think it could keep the momentum of the club going. I have been sad that I have been in the group of people whose participation has decreased, but it has simply been due to the school-load. However, my last semester is coming up and I am very excited to be more active in my reading and GoodReads. I want to make a comment in that I like the new idea about voting all at once. I also wanted to say thank you for the mods who put a lot of work into this group. As someone who comes and goes (unfortunately) because of life situations, I thank you for the work and the fact that I always have interesting, insightful discussions on books to come back to.
Lori, I'm right there with you in the school time rut. Every time I pick up a book, I enjoy reading it. But the thought of reading.... I think I'm almost boycotting just because I know that school is starting. I'm still trying to truck along though. I only take my book for breaks at work, so I read about 30 minutes a day. I guess it's slowly but surely. The Help sounds good. I hope it gets you out of your rut. :)
Zala, it's interesting you mentioned Coupling. I just rented it from my Netflix. :) I hope it's good. I need some new TV to watch. Small TV world. I am a sucker and bought the Elizabeth Gaskell collection. I was wanting to watch North and South, but I couldn't find it at a rental store. So I bought it. Ah... I guess it will be a gift to myself! :)
yeah... the wonderful thing about it was that she was cured and could eventually talk. It was a neat episode. But I just cracked up when I saw her. :)
Carol, a spreadsheet will be awesome! Thanks for going this. It helps feed the addiction for us list makers. :)
Thanks for the info on John Irving. I picked up A Widow for One Year. But now that I'm back into Anna K., I might take it back to the library and put it on my list to read later. I had forgotten that John Irving wrote "The Cider House Rules." I might read that one first as an introduction to John Irving.
I really didn't see Paris. I'll have to go back and look for her. But I definitely caught Mrs. Kim. I think she was a patient who had laryngeal cancer. She didn't speak most of the episode. But she was still super intense. Typical Mrs. Kim. :)
wooohooo! Go Angie! Sadly, still behind on my goals. But I picked up Anna K. again, and I'm really enjoying it. Slowly, but surely I'll get there.
Welcome Katie! I love this group, and I hope you will too. It's fun to discuss, find new opinions, and (of course) find oh so many more books to read. Hope to her your opinions and thoughts soon!
I like the Lizzy Bennet and Rory comparison. I did not think of it when I first read it, but I definitely see the concept now. I loved both characters. I think I agree with the other half of this discussion on Bella. I don't see many similarities to her and Rory, especially because after she met Edward, she didn't want to go to college. She just wanted to be with him. Which, can be a really romantic point of view. But at the same time, it's different from Rory, who wanted to be loved for who she was. And who she was was always going.
I love the theme song. I think it is because I watched Gilmore Girls on TV so many times, and I couldn't fast forward the song. Now it's a theme to my sister's and my relationship. When she made me a playlist to drive to college for the first time, "Where You Lead," was the last song on the list. a kind of closing. The end of a life and the beginning of a new one. So it will always have a special place in my heart. Every time I miss my sister, I watch Gilmore Girls and sing along with the song. It makes me feel at home. Weird... I guess. But that's how my sister and I are. :)
Anna... 101. That's incredible!!! I'm jealous. :) I just finished book number 18. Which is very low for my goal. however, I have a month off from school. I just visited the library and came home with five books. So there is still hope! I am placing great faith on my library and hoping that it will bring me out of my reading funk.
Lori and Deanna, I absolutely loved the Time Traveler's Wife. It was one of my favorites by far. They are actually making a movie.. I hope they do the story well. I'll be interested to hear what you both think of the book.I am currently still floundering a bit on my reading. I just finished "London Bridges" by James Patterson. I was hoping that the sort of fluff book would get me back into reading. However, i can officially say I am not a James Patterson fan. His short chapter style irritates me. On to something else. I'm thinking about reading something by John Irving. Has anyone read him? And how did you like him?
Lori, that cracks me up that you got your oil changed and read Anna K. I got my oil changed a couple days ago and did the same thing. I'm been a bit bummed, though because I am having trouble getting back into reading, sadly. I'm going to school this summer, so it's been a bit of a tough time finding time/wanting time to read.
Welcome everyone. Melanie, I'm excited you are into reading literature even though you are majoring in something science-wise. I'm a nursing major, and the majority of my friends look at me like I'm crazy when I say that I love to read literature and took a British Lit class for fun. Welcome! :)
Puan, My mom read aloud to me as well! I think that's what made me love books so much from an early age. Good luck with your little one. I think that loving books is one of the best parts of my life. :)
Barbara, I love that you have a theme to your lists and goals for the year. I will definitely have to try that next year. :)I'm doing alright on my goal for the year. Now that summer's here, I am enjoying the freedom to lounge and catch up on my reading. On my trip, I got to read Bourne Identity and North and South. Now, I'm feeling adventuresome and I think I'm going to tackle Anna karenina. Who knows how that will go? I'm just excited to be back in the states and for it to be summertime. :)
Lori, I'm right with you... super behind on my goals. But summer is coming soon! I just finished The Time Machine which is my 13th book for the year. But I keep encouraging myself that I have two 18 hours flights to Cambodia coming up... lots of reading to come. Any good ideas for long, but interesting books to take with me?
