I listened to this on audio last year and was pretty disappointed in it. The idea sounded fun and interesting, but the execution was (to me) a rambling, pointless mess. Your mileage may vary.
I just love Pelecanos! If you like things fairly gritty and realistic as opposed to happily-ever-after, I recommend you try his quartet featuring Derek Strange, a PI in Washington, DC. The first book is Right As Rain. More recently, he has written a string of standalone novels, my favorite of which is last year's The Turnaround.
I think the first book of Munro's that I read was Lives of Girls and Women. That's a great place to start. Enjoy!
Try reading Jonathan Carroll, especially White Apples. You might also like The Echo Maker by Richard Powers.
A Prayer for Owen Meany is probably my favorite Irving book. I would also recommend The Cider House Rules, and A Son of the Circus is pretty interesting too.
I've read a lot of her books, though none recently. You might also consider reading "Memoirs of a Survivor," which, if I recall correctly, may be a bit more accessible than "Briefing."
