I lost my Murakami virginity to The Wind-up Bird Chronicle and to this day it still remains my favourite book of all time.
Roberto Bolano has been compared to Murakami a fair few times. I can't see the comparison myself, however.
Kafka on the Shore, while I didn't entirely dislike it (in fact I enjoyed it quite a bit in some places), left a bit of a sour taste in my mouth. It seemed a bit too ambitious, trying to clutch a few too many concepts plus Kafka didn't really strike me as likeable. That said it wasn't too bad of a read plus I'm sure I'm missing something in the text and will re-read it at some point.
