6968 I think Stevens is an immensely tragic character. Personally I don't think like or dislike comes into it much. Well, I suppose it does - I would just rather a flawed character like Stevens, who is like the last bridge standing between the traditional and the modern England. Such a beautiful, sensitive book.

I'm going to read this after I've finished my current book. Have you seen the film?

6968 Plays of the Thirties, with plays by Rudolf Besier, Noel Coward, Dodie Smith and Terence Rattigan.
6968 Damn. My own nomination and I haven't got time to read it. Might be able to towards the end of the month. For now I'll just say that I've seen the film and I think it's excellent. Really. I recommend it.

6968 Fallen Angel by andrew Taylor. It's the omnibus of his Roth trilogy. I thought the TV adaptation was pretty good so I have high hopes. It's over 900 pages long but I think it's the sort of book that pulls you in.

6968 Hi Judy. Actually, the last post was 2 days ago - mine! We read a range of stuff, but I generally just join in if it's something I want to read. Anyway, welcome.

6968 I'm reading (or rather, listening to) The Grey Woman by Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell.

6968 That's a shame. Call me a snob but if you're the daughter of Arthur Miller and married to Daniel Day-Lewis, I expect genius!

No but I really want to. Cate Blanchett sounds perfect for the role, but I'm not sure about Dench. How did you find it compared to the novel?
