Great connection to Persuasion, Sherwood. I have had the same experience. Persuasion is improved by the knowledge I gained from O'Brian.
Although he didn't fit the physical description, there is an important factor about Bettany that I fear tampering with: his chemistry with Crowe. Chemistry between Aubrey and Maturin is the single most important factor in their presentation on screen, and what a shame it would be if they found an actor who "fit" the part, could act his socks off, but was dead flat in conjunction with Crowe.

I started with Master and Commander a few years back and went through all 21 books. I read the first three back to back to back, then realized I never wanted them to end, so to prolong the experience I started throwing a couple of books in between. I took about a year off after I finished the series, and I started reading the Sharpe books in chronological order (the next is Sharpe's Rifles), but then my Dad started Aubrey/Maturin a month ago and I found myself picking up Master and Commander again. I can't stop myself.
I haven't read Hornblower, but I plan to. I am a Sharpe fan, though. I think he is a nice foil for Aubrey/Maturin (even if Cornwell isn't quite the writer O'Brian is); he is much darker and I really enjoy his struggle to come to terms with his personal ethics.
It is indeed, Bob. And I am glad for that too. I love the fun in Aubrey/Maturin, but it's nice to enter the darkness with Sharpe for a while. It's a great balance to bounce back and forth between the two series.
I actually thought it would take longer for me to restart Aubrey/Maturin, but after only a year off I am back in Port Mahon and loving being back with Lucky Jack and the cunning doctor. I don't know what the rest of you think, but I don't think there is a finer meeting of great characters in all of literature. I love that early on Jack doesn't have a clue how close his captaincy came to being over before it started. Somehow I don't think Lucky Jack would have been so lucky in a duel with Stephen.
I like this one: "Killick was in many ways a wretched servant, fractious, mean . . . hopelessly coarse; but in others he was a pearl without a thorn. For a moment Jack passed some other expressions in review, and having reached bricks without price he went to sleep" amongst many others.
Has anyone here ever read The Richard Sharpe Series? If so, I am curious if you have heard or read of any connection between Captain Jack Aubrey and Cornwell's Captain Chase from Sharpe's Trafalgar. Captain Chase feels like he is lifted straight out of O'Brian, and I am wondering if this is on purpose, an homage perhaps.
