Hi Mike,

Welcome aboard! Your story seems to share much with the rest of us.

6417 I read Almuric a couple of months ago (for the first time) and thought it might make a good topic for discussion.
Please feel free to discuss Almuric and any of it's plot points in this thread. Anyone who has not read Almuric yet I suggest a quick look at the other (spoiler free) thread!

6417 Hotspur,

Thanks, I have kind of lost track of it myself these past couple of months! I am trying edit a show together just now but am having real problems getting inspired.

I read most of Empire of the East about 18 years ago, unfortunately the book was in a guest house I stayed in and I had to leave before finishing it! I have always meant to get hold of it and finish it off!

6417 I read quite a few of the Moorcock books, back in the 80s.
The Hawkmoon series, then Corum and finally Elric. I really enjoyed them at the time, but I have found the later Elric books a little trickier to get into.

I also read the Oswald Bastable trilogy a few years ago, very interesting if you have any leanings towards steampunk!

6417 I have most of KEW's Kane books, I really must dig them out and read them!

6417 Please add any books that you might think a Howard fan would enjoy!

To kick things off I would suggest Legend by David Gemmell, or any other books by him! It is definitely a late 20th century book, but has some of the raw power and Gemmell was clearly influenced by REH.

I would also suggest that some of you can blow your own trumpets on this list! Mark Finn, you can give us some details of Blood and Thunder. Charles Gramlich, give us the details of your Talera books (not for my benefit, I've already reviewed the first one on my podcast).

6417 I just re-read Beyond The Black River a couple of weeks ago, and yes it certainly stands the re-reading.

I actually read it on my smartphone, which is not a great way to read Howard, but when you don't have an actual book handy it's better than nothing!

Jim,

Interesting points!
I agree that KEW did a good job, but some of the later Tor books were awful and Conan of Venarium
by Harry Turtledove, I could certainly have done without!

I am certainly not averse to some editing of Howard, and when I can't get any Howard I have not read before I am happy to read some of the pastiches, but there is certainly a lot that should be avoided!

6417 OK, so I am a little late setting up this thread!

Please let everyone know who you are and give a little background about your interest in Howard!

I'll kick it off!

I bought my first REH book in 1977/8 when I picked up a second-hand copy of Conan of Cimmeria (UK Sphere - black bordered edition). I was around 12 at the time.
Since then I have bought far too many REH books and am still on the lookout for more (I am waiting for my copy of the Collected Poetry, to arrive from The REH Foundation as I type).

Aside from my interest in REH, I am an avid reader of Science Fiction and the pulps. Not much of a fantasy fan (other than Sword and Sorcery).

I also produce the Dial P For Pulp! Podcast (www.dialpforpulp.com).

6417 Do you read any REH pastiches, if you do, do you enjoy them, or should they all be burned?
Dec 08, 2008 05:54AM

6417 I enjoy the Conan stories, but I tend to prefer Bran Mak Morn and Solomon Kane, what about you?
Dec 08, 2008 05:51AM

6417 Tell everyone about your latest REH book!

I just received a review copy of Paizo Publishings Almuric, which I am currently reading...
Dec 08, 2008 05:49AM

6417 Well I guess most will plump for S&S, but lets see if anyone is inclined in a different direction!

Do you prefer Howard's S&S, his Westerns, fight stories, or anything else?

I have a keen interest in his poetry, and mainly read the S&S stuff, but I will read just about any of Howard's work. I do struggle with the fight stories though!
