I've read 12 of the 30 and almost every book on the list is on my radar. It looks like a great list to me. It has a lot of variety and seems to be based on what's good, not what's popular or what the literary snobs liked.
I share that concern as well. Out here, I'm between a rock and a hard place when it comes to book buying. You'd think an area as heavily populated as Orange County, CA would have independent bookstores. Unfortunately, we just don't. I think there may be a few that specialize in metaphysical books and there are a couple of really good independent children's bookstores, but everything else is B&N or Borders. When I buy, I often end up with Amazon quite often because the brick and mortar chain stores don't carry what I'm looking for.
Is it just in the Greater Los Angeles area, or has the language of the local news become more casual all over the country? Some examples:
Using "cops" instead of "police".
Using "guy" instead of "man".
Calling suspected criminals "bad guys".
It's been going on a few years here, but I still find it disturbing. Are they trying to dumb-down the news? Do they think people won't know what they mean if they say "police" or "man"?
I'm with Carlie. I think he needs to go to jail. He did admit to having sex with the child and, from her testimony, it was definitely rape, not statutory rape, but rape rape. If it had been my 13 year old, I'd have been raising hell for the last 30 years. As a parent, I can tell you that 13 years old is a child, no matter what others think. It's a very vulnerable age. If this had happened today, would the girl's identity remained anonymous, thus eliminating the argument about causing her more suffering?

Gawd! Back then, 18 was like 30 now. Plus, Mary Shelley was the daughter of two geniuses and hung out with a literary crowd. Why would anyone dispute her ability to write a masterpiece of English literature?
I was reading Middlesex during lunch today and at one point the protagonist talks about how the parents decide to get a set of the 150 greatest books ever written and to read them all. I wondered what happened to the other 50.
Rob, I've coveted those books for years. I would love to have a bookcase full of them. Of course, I'd probably go to the library or purchase paperback editions for actual reading. I'd be afraid to mar those lovely volumes.I really like the new Penguin Classics series with covers by a fashion illustrator.
This thread reminds me a lot of a video that came out a few years ago:http://sendables.jibjab.com/originals/bi...
I am absolutely disgusted at the state of manufacturing in the United States. It is almost impossible to find merchandise at any price that's not made in China or elsewhere in Asia. The lie we're told is that nobody wants to pay the price for American-made goods. Last year, I was trying to find a dress for my daughter's wedding and I couldn't find anything that wasn't imported. Even $500 dresses at Bloomingdale's were made in China! You can't tell me that the $150 dresses at Macy's or the $500 dresses at Bloomingdales can't be made here in the USA.
BunWat wrote: "OMG! Cover madness! I read a Catharine Asaro last year, and I didn't like the cover at all, although it wasn't nearly as bad as that one."I read Schism last year. The cover wasn't as bad, but it did look more like a 1982 fantasy novel than a 2004 science fiction novel.
Does anyone else think the guy on the cover of Diamond Star looks like Andy Gibb?
Amelia wrote: "Romance, but some romance/sci-fi are even worse, alien ladies hanging off a muscular hunk, gag me..."Why is it always human men and alien women? Aren't alien guys hot too?

Sherri wrote: "Oh yeah. Captain Eo was....not good. The only reason it played as long as it did was Cool 3D effects, great shortness, and the willingness of people at Epcot to sit in a dark, air conditioned roo..."Yeah, Captain Eo was pretty bad. So was "Honey, I Shrunk the Audience."
I was listening to the news on an LA station on my way home at 3:30. As far as I know, the cause of death hasn't been determined. He was just found on the floor of his home and rushed to UCLA Medical Center where he was declared dead around 3:15. I suspect it's going to take quite some time for autopsy and toxicology reports to come back.

Just what I need--another book group I can't keep up with. ;) I did join and vote though. Maybe I will do some reading and discussing.
