59836 Had one of the best Pig Skull father/son book discussions yesterday afternoon at Scott County Library. Boys grades 3-6 and their fathers discussed John Flanagan's first book in his Brotherband Chronicles--The Outcasts. Terrific book about Viking-like Skandian boys learning how to work together as brotherbands aboard Skandian raiding ships.

Pig Skull boys really enjoyed discussing the nuances of "stinky Skandians smelling worse than a villager's overripe goat."

It's hard to believe that the Pig Skull Book Club will be five years old next month. I've had and do have a great bunch of boys and fathers.

59836 I haven't read Into The Wild but I have seen the movie. I have read his excellent Into Thin Air which is about a disastrous climb up Mt. Everest.

Readers who like Into the Wild might also be interested in One Man's Wilderness which is available in book and DVD at Scott County Library.

59836 What makes it a great book? John Flanagan wrote it.

He's the best YA writer out there! "Suzy Q" Collins, Hunger Games, is a mere keyboard hacker compared to Flanagan. Collins v. Flanagan = hype v. substance.

59836 Any book that features severed body parts, biking and making beer is all right by me! It's difficult finding books that embrace all of these nuanced subjects. Pride and Prejudice comes close. I need to start writing for this. My niche market awaits!

I see y'all like to ride strange critters. Scariest thing I ever rode was a lawn mower tractor without brakes. I screamed like a girl as I careened downhill out of control bouncing off maples, oaks and sweetgums. Thank goodness for those runaway-tractor-stopping-rose bushes! Of course, I started screaming all over again when I hit those. I need to plant thornless roses.
