Yes. I hear Neville (of HP fame) in Tubby Ted (one of the Lost Boys) when I listen to Peter and the Starcatchers or Peter and the Shadow Thieves... Jim dale is wonderful, but his voices are so distinctive that I think the character who first "used" a voice (whichever character we, the listeners, heard first) sort of owns the voice for us.
Which audio of Jane Eyre are you listening to? I really wanted to listen to it, but the Librivox version I downloaded was so atrocious (mispronouncing simple words!) that I really want a great narrator if I'm going to buy it.
I just TRIED to start listening to a LibriVox production of Jane Eyre and quit after the THIRD mispronunciation in 5 minutes... Ann Marie Williams ruined it for me... I'm just glad it was a free download and not one I'd paid for!!
The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka that I downloaded free at http://www.greatbooksaudio.com/ --- I never would had read it if I hadn't found this freebie site while searching the itunes podcast list and it's not the absolute best quality but I'm enjoying it!
*edit* grrr... part three is part one but labled as 3!
I try to balance my rating... for example Augusten Burroughs read his "Running with Scissors" and he was terrible, but I liked some of the book despite his narration so I marked it a star higher here than I did at audible, and explained my rating in each case.
I am listening to Running with Scissors being read by the author and I really wish it wasn't! I need to finish it for book club so I'm trying to hear the words in my head as I'd read them instead of as read. Bleh!
I just finished Labyrinth, by Kate Mosse, read by Donada Peters... there is another audio version, but I QUITE enjoyed this one!!
I also enjoy author-narrated books. A wrinkle in Time was wonderful and listening to The Kite Runner read by the author made the book so real for me. I also enjoyed hearing Stardust read by Gaiman, and very much enjoyed an interview with him regarding his audiobooks, radio plays, and other media.
