Dear Karen Hesse,
I am a college student currently studying Elementary Education at Penn State University. In our literacy class, we have created our own children’s literature awards. My award is titled “The Hero Award”. It was designed for a book that portrays a main character that puts the needs of others before himself/herself. I feel that the little girl in The Cats In Krasinski Square captures the essence of this selflessness beautifully. This award is about courage and sacrifice in the face of adversity, and I believe this book captures that theme. I was also impressed by the historical facts behind this story, especially the story of the cats at the Warsaw train station. I admire the amount of research you put into your writing, for I think it adds a great deal of substance and depth to your stories. So for all the reasons above, I have decided to bestow this award upon you.
Respectfully yours,
Brandin Kitt

Good for teaching children to be more understanding of their siblings with special needs by putting themselves in their sibling's shoes.

Some Things Are ScaryBook about children facing everyday fears. Really practical to discuss fears with children.
Franklin Plays HockeyGreat book about teamwork! Franklin has to make a decision between winning and being part of a team.
Awarded to a book that displays a main character that puts others before himself/herself. The book must display the themes of sacrifice and courage. This courage could be either physical, psychological, or both. This award is given to a book that relays these themes of heroism to teach children that there are times when they must rise to the occasion and stand up for what they think is right, whether that struggle is physical, mental, or emotional. It is the decision to make this personal sacrifice in times of turmoil that makes a true hero.
Quote: "All heroes and heroines help express something about this planet that the author needs to say. They also reflect the author's view of the world and the human's place within it" (Chetwin).
Quote: “True heroism is remarkably sober, very undramatic. It is not the urge to surpass all others at whatever cost, but the urge to serve others at whatever cost.” -Arthur Ashe
