It's a third person. Though I believe it's narrated by one of the side characters. It has lots of dialogue(which reveals characters thoughts and motives) lots of intrigue. Complex and more dry. Hard to get through. But I may have a different opinion when I finally finish it.
The main caveat I have with the other sun books and why I've never made it that far(though I am one book away from finishing Long Sun)is the narrative style changed. The baroque, hilarious, and partially mad voice of Severian is the main appeal to me of the first books.
Yeah I like Silk (slowly getting through those books)...but the Books of the New Sun have baroque beauty I think unlike anything else in the English language and I suspect on another read of them I may place them as my favorite. That said I would lean toward Fifth Head of Cerberus three intricately entwined novellas that I can not get out of my head. Creepy, beautiful, filled with literary allusions, and wonderous, handing a copy of this to anyone should end the scifi/lit debate. I think Wolfe is really good at Novellas (at least in the seventies) "Death of Doctor Island, "Tracking Song", "Seven American Nights", and "Silhouette" are all quite astounding.
