Time spent re-reading the New Sun is never wasted. Read that one backward and forward, out loud and upside down, until you've penetrated its deepest mysteries. Then read it again because you missed something. Those other books are good but they don't really compare in my opinion.
The Book of the New Sun is my favorite by Wolfe or any other author for that matter. I don't consider it a series, even though it is divided into four volumes. It's one continuous story, and even the title, Book of the New Sun, implies this unity. If I had to pick one of the four parts, though, I guess I'd choose The Shadow of the Torturer because I find Wolfe's imagined city of Nessus endlessly compelling. Also, the first seven or so chapters make a brilliant story unto themselves.
