John posted a blog today on why the iPhone app is finished but not released: http://blog.bookmooch.com/2009/09/06/iph...
The site uses Javascript, so if your cell phone doesn't allow it (or has it turned off), that might be causing a problem.
Oh, I always price the packages before I accept. I'm on a first-name basis with my postal reps at two post offices!
After reading the recent survey results posted to the blog by John, I thought I'd start sending a few books outside the United States and/or North American continent. I've enjoyed it so far.
My only qualm or disappointment is when I want to mooch from someone outside my "zone" and they state they only use surface mail. For me, using the US Postal Service, I don't have an option for surface mail (which involves shipping and weeks at sea). My least expensive option is first class airmail in most cases. So, sadly, I haven't opted to mooch many books from other non-US citizens.
What are your experiences with international mooching?
I don't have any trouble accessing the existing site via my BlackBerry. Since the site is very lean and uncluttered, it doesn't take long to load. And since my e-mail comes immediately to my BlackBerry, with imbedded links to my WishList items that have become available, it works out very well most of the time.
Even though BookMooch has it's outages, I prefer to support a completely nonprofit outfit. I don't want or need to subscribe to another service or be bombarded with advertising.
I get a daily e-mail from the forums, but never look at it. The forums are completely useless at this point. He's supposed to be implementing something better (according to the blog).
I am also having trouble getting the main BookMooch website. I can get to the blog site, but nothing has been posted there to indicate it's offline. http://blog.bookmooch.com
I have only left negative feedback once. It involved a personal pet peeve of mine - trading in books that have had the covers ripped off of them. While I don't want to encourage bad transactions, I also don't like to leave negative feedback. It least I can change it back to neutral or positive without much red tape.
I'm pretty patient. I've waited nearly six months for a book that I finally reported lost. Since the sender's account when inactive about a month after I requested the book, my suspicion is the book was never sent.
As of a couple of hours ago, the site is back online and functioning. As far as I can determine, there has been no data loss.
I put a cookbook on my wishlist today. First time I've tried that type of book. I'm not sure if I'll be successful in mooching it though. If other cooks are like me, you hoard your cookbooks. :)
I only mooch books that are recommended to me by GoodReads friends, are "book of the month" selections or got a five star review here on GoodReads.
I re-mooch nearly all the books I mooch. I post as soon as I finish reading and write my review. The only exception is if the book is a "book of the month" selection for a GoodReads group and I need to hang on to it to refer during discussions.
