Lorie,I agree with you completely. CS Lewis opened my mind to a greater understanding of God. And James Dobson did me a favor with his Strong-Willed Child books (I had 2 of my own.)
And in a side benefit, Dr. Dobson's radio shows helped my husband understand fathering and husbanding better. He worked a job where he went from account to account and would come home and discuss what Dr. D had discussed each day! A wonderful help for us!
I would like to remind everyone that the Roman Catholic Church has a huge international membership and a lot of variation in what individual members believe. So personal experiences are valid, but limited.
That's why I try to pay attention to what is coming directly from the highest levels of the church.
Just as in Protestant churches, things vary within congregations and families.
Does that perspective help?
Glenn,
I hear you! I'm a little alarmed at the new trend for LDS churches not to call themselves LDS, but something like Community Christian. This started near me when I was in Iowa.
But Mormons aren't the only ones who use the same terms but mean different things. New Age is into this also.
This is an interesting discussion. I think that a lot of Protestants are completely unaware of the changes that have taken place in the Roman Catholic Church over the past 4 decades.
Many of the issues that separated Protestants and Catholics 500 years ago have disappeared, such as the Latin liturgy and reading the Bible in our own languages.
The basic chism historically was over the issue of grace vs. works. And interestingly, a few years ago the Pope signed an agreement with the American Evangelical Lutheran Church agreeing that grace not works is the way of salvation.
I am a Protestant but have often gone to mass with friends and have tried to educate myself about the changes so that I can understand my friends and their church.
But in the end, the issue that decides whether a person is a Christian or not is what about Christ?
If a person believes that Jesus is the Son of God, that he was fully man and fully God, that he died to pay the debt of our sins with his blood, that he rose again, and will come again, then that person is a Christian.
Everything else is secondary to that. We can disagree on everything else but not on that because that is the way of salvation. IMHO <g>

I'm a fan of REDEEMING LOVE too! What a powerful book! I'm proud to be able to call Francine a friend and she is like her books, true to God.

I wouldn't even try to "fix" one thing. I don't have God's foreknowlege so I'd be afraid of doing something that even though motivated by love would turn out wrong. After Christ FIXED everything with his sacrificial death, the way to heal mankind was provided when he died and rose again. I'm just one very limited mortal being. The world is too big for me to tackle. And so praying God's will be done IS THE BEST.

I just asked Francine about what she thought of a 13 year old reading her book Atonement Child. Her response"
"Answer: depends on the 13 year old. I have had young teenagers and older teenagers read the book. If the teen reads it, it would be good for the parent to also read the book (beforehand) and use it for discussion."
Hope that helps.
Lyn
