527 I usually don't follow threads here anymore, but I thought I'd respond to this one.

I created the group as a joint venture because I think the two genres are closely related. Yes, ok, they're different because aliens/tech vs. elves or whatever, but one of the main points is this:

Both of these types of books appeal to many of the same people.

Both genres need a little help in today's publishing world, so why segment them? I'm not even speaking of Goodreads, but the labeling in general.

Additionally, I happen to like both and was looking for a way to talk about books or get suggestions from people like me...

Keep in mind that I'm a "way back" member, before recommendations or 90% of what's on Goodreads these days.

527 Hi Margaret,

They're referring to http://tor.com/index.php?option=com_cont...

There's entire novels available for download there.

However, they used to be in easier-to-find-and-get format (a list), and I put them online awhile ago for anyone who wants them...

Part I: http://www.kyle-brady.com/2008/06/04/sci...
Part II: http://www.kyle-brady.com/2008/06/16/new...
Part III: http://www.kyle-brady.com/2008/07/04/e-b...

Enjoy!

527 Debbie: if you would have followed my link, you would have seen me say that alot of those are from the Tor mailing list over the last few months.

But that's ok.

527 I'm operating on a "don't know, don't care" policy. If they want to sue me for it, or try and spin some copyright crap about it, that's fine.

But until then, I don't really care.

527 Hey everyone,

I put up a bunch of e-books I've gotten from different sources over the last few months... all SciFi/Fantasy.

Thought I'd share them with you:
http://www.kyle-brady.com/2008/06/04/sci...

And, yes, it's legal. They were all sent to me by the publisher for free.

527 Mike: Thanks!

John: True... I actually got a similar response over at the OSC forums... http://www.hatrack.com/cgi-bin/ubbmain/u...

I was thinking of posting an update to my ... post ... with some of that info.

527 I just finished a letter to Orson Scott Card and sent it off... I also posted it on my blog for anyone that's interested in the ramblings of a die-hard fan of the "Enderverse":

527 I agree... definitely not like the others, far too political. I'm not sure it's my "biggest in the last year", because I read way too much, but it's definitely on the list.

527 Elton: Really? I *loved* the ending! I thought it was long, but necessary like the end of the movie version of LOTR Return of the King.

I'm not suggesting it was the best ever written, but definitely better than some... most notably the ending for "Deathly Hollows" by JK Rowling.

527 I'm moving forward with my project to create a foundation/nonprofit, raise money, and have an immense, awesome library in Silicon Valley by 2018!

I've already "cold contacted" a bunch of influential geeks I'd like to have on board, but if you're interested in being a part of it, email me: brady.k@gmail.com

Thanks!

527 Well, Shannon and Kristjan, I agree.

I pushed thru Soul of Fire/Faith of the Fallen/Pillars of Creation to get back to the series. I was hoping he came back around to it, and he eventually did.

But, at the same time, I definitely had "throw the book" moments.

527 I truncated the categories: removed "other", and moved "book promotion" and "maintenance" into "maintenance / book promotion"

I think this is really as small as it should get. It's not that difficult to look at the top item or two of each category and see if it was updated. You're looking at almost the same amount of items as if there were no categories, but are instead separated out.

Maybe this is the Engineer in me, but: order > chaos.

527 Travis: You should try and finish it. It does get repetitive and dull in the middle of it... but believe me: it picks up again. The books where Richard disappears and they talk more in depth about the Communism vs. Capitalism... those are terrible. But immediately after those 2 (or 3?) books, the series snaps back to what it's good at, and then finishes triumphantly in the last 2 books.

It's worth trudging through them. Most definitely.

527 Well, I find these topics to be much easier to look through than a simple list.

Unless many other people feel this way, it's going to stay like this.

--Kyle
Dec 17, 2007 03:54AM

527 Well, instead of grumbling about something, why not try and help it work?

What don't you like? The labels? What would you label them as instead?

These are the things that help.

Updates (1 new)
Dec 13, 2007 03:18AM

527 Apparently we have folders now... so I sorted every thread (it only took a few minutes, I swear) into what I thought were appropriate categories.

When you post, let's try and differentiate between the different topics, and if you have a suggestion for a new folder, send me a message and I'll probably add it (as long as it makes sense)

A Lofty Goal (4 new)
Dec 09, 2007 12:06AM

527 I definitely will be talking with local libraries and everyone in the future... but I have to get the foundation started first! I don't want to submit any paperwork until mid-January, so I can hopefully avoid any tax/income/donation/etc filings.

Good idea though

Starting a Book (2 new)
Dec 09, 2007 12:04AM

527 Hey everyone,

I've started writing a scifi/fantasy novel, titled "Whispers Into Shadow".

I'll be posting chapters here on Goodreads as I move forward with this project, and would love to get some feedback.

You can find it over here: http://www.goodreads.com/story/show/7154...
