The first book I read by Butler was Kindred, and it was great. It made me a huge fan and I've read most of her work now, so that's my personal recommendation for a first read.
What about Mary Doria Russell? The Sparrow was one of the most intense books I've ever read (I'm still working up the courage to read the sequel).
