I think I may have read it more then a year ago, but 1984 was my biggest dissapointment. It was a good story barried in a very long political essay that I wasn't even remotely interested in. I barely got through it.
I read the Magyk Series. I really enjoyed it. Some people call it a Harry Potter wanna be. I didn't feel that it was a copy though. It is written quite differently. There are similarities in the Hero is a boy that has been raised an orphan, and there is magic. Although that I feel is where the similarities end. The series is a fun read. They aren't great litature or anything, but I did enjoy the time I spent with them.
You could also try Powells online. http://www.powells.com/
I love that store, sigh I miss that store.
I don't often re-read books. I think the only time I have is when I have read the book, then I listen to it on audio at a later date.
I usually remember to much about the book to enjoy reading it again. However, as I get older that is changing. Think I will re-read more and more.
I began reading YA fantasy because it is what my daughter is reading. A great way to keep communication open with a teenager. A nice nutreal subject to talk, laugh, and interact over with out arguing. I didn't even know I liked fantasy until she started reading it. I love it and am now reading stuff and suggesting it to her.
Also I love audio books. I have found my local library carries a ton of YA fantasy in audio and none at all in adult.
I just read Thud! I had no idea it was a series untill I began it. I really enjoyed it though. I will be looking up some of the others in the series.
I am not trying to be a pain in the butt. The labels are fine. I just liked being able to come to the page and the most recent posted to thread being right at the top. Now I have to look through all of the threads last post time or date to figure out which posts I haven't read yet.
I know I know not that big of a deal.
I tried to respond under your post. It wouldn't let me though. I am probably the only one that doesn't like them, but I don't like them. Just putting it out there.
I have always thought of Stephen King as strictly horor... Guess I am very off base with that thought.
When I read the Tommyknockers I was drinking a lot, like Mr. King, probably why I liked it. Also I am pretty sure The Talisman was parallel universes not time travel. I just read that one a year or 2 ago. Right before I read the gunslinger series.
Speaking of the gunslinger series, I thought it was good, not amazing or fantastic. However I am so in love with the ending. The ending was amazing and fantastic. I don't know why but it couldn't have been more perfect and profound to me.
I have read the second one Inkspell. I keep hoping to see the first on audio in my library but haven't found it yet.
Ok I always like to start from the begining, what is the name of the first book? or the one that will introduce me to this world the best?
I have to admit I am so young in the genre I don't think I have a worst. I do have a best though. Maybe it is imature but Harry Potter is still my all time fave.
I just started the second Dune book. I bought the paper back though. I am having trouble reading it, I need to find my glasses. The print is awful. So right now it is going painfully slow. I am hoping when I find the reading glasses it will get better. Maybe I could use a magnifing glass....
Rindis,
Sounds like the perfect book for a person with ADD. Think I will suggest them to my daughter.
My mom and sisters have always read SF. I have never much wanted to be like them so I have read mostly popular fiction. I did read Ender's Game at one of my sisters insistance. I loved it, have not yet read the rest of the series. I also just recently read Dune (ignoring the fact my mom read it and loved it years and years ago). I love this book too. So my list is very short, and obvious I think. Yet if you are just starting these are great books to start with.
Amanda, I don't think I saw the Septamus Heap books, by Angie Sage on the list. My 14yo loved them. They are not the best written books, however they are entertaining. She also very much enjoys the Bloody Jack series. I don't think they are fantasy they are about pirates and are adventure novels. She is an avid reader and loves them so I thought I would suggest them to you.
