4862 Just finished Olive Kitteridge by Elizabeth Strout, a collection of short stories with the same character, Olive, being somehow part of the story. Whether she was a customer, a friend, a mother, a wife, played a large role or simply a cameo, the reader was able to capture a wider perspective through seeing Olive from every angle. I've never read anything like that and really found it an interesting way to get to know someone.

4862 Just finished the Little Stranger by Sarah Waters. It tried real hard to be a ghost story but didn't quite reach that goal in my opinion. I think Waters is a great writer though and enjoyed the attention to detail and character development, just not enough suspense as it was long and somewhat slow.

4862 Hello - I'm Carla and a Community Relations Manager at a bookstore, an avid reader (in 3 book clubs one of which I host out of my apartment) and am in love with your blog and podcasts. I too was ecstatic to discover it and have started at the beginning in order to not miss anything. I spend most of my work day in my office corresponding with schools and non-profits but manage to sneak out to the floor and get my "book talk" fix with customers every once in awhile, my favorite part of the day! Thanks for taking the time to put this together, I feel a huge sense of connection with other bibliophiles, my friends have just about disowned me as all I talk about is books...

4862 Like Karen, I find poetry readings and poetry slams bring poetry to life especially when read from the writer of the poem as they bring with the reading the passion that came from their experiences. I have however discovered Roger Housden's series of poems that inspired me to read poetry more. Ten Poems to Change Your Life, Ten Poems to Open Your Heart, Ten Poems to Set You Free, Ten Poems to Last a Lifetime & Ten Poems of Love and Revelation. His commentary of why the poem touched him and what was going on in his life when he read it really made me feel a personal connection to him and also the desire to find other poems by some of the authors, particularly The Journey by Mary Oliver. That poem in particular came to me at a time when I was at a crossroads and it was either change my life situation to save my spirit or stay and kill my spirit. Poetry can be life changing if you let it.
