It is indeed and he was. very good. stopped tbe Taiping Rebellion from taking Shanghai and getting access to a port and Western weapons. He was eventually killed and his army was taken over by Gordon, who earned the sobriquet "Chinese" as a result of his efforts.
A bit of a tough one. An obscure but interesting fellow.
1. 19th Century US Southern adventurer
2. Prince of China
3. Helped stop the Taiping Rebellion
4. leader of mercenary forces
with pleasure. would have helped us a bit to brush up on that before venturing forth on our latest adventure there.
Gandamak and the destruction of the 44th in Britain's first Afghan war. FUBAR indeed. only one man made it to Jalabad a doctor. I'm a big Flashman fan.
I tend to think the Nobel folks are just pleased as punch that Bush is gone and Obama is the un-Bush if you like. Bush, the fellow who told the world after 9-11 you're either with us or against us and then attacked Iraq for little apparent reason. Unlike Bush who broke off talks with North Korea at first and who appeared to be moving towards attacking Iran. Obama stressed talk with both Iran and North Korea, while McCain was singing "bomb, bomb, bomb...bomb, bomb Iran." So, I think they legitimately believe Obama has been a tremendous boon to world peace, even if he hasn't had time to accomplish much so far.
more recently, he cancelled the missle system for Eastern Europe and both Russia and the US appear to be talking more now as well, a trend most of the EU and NATO wants to encourage. I think they are trying to use positive reinforcement to encourage this trend. But, I would agree it's really too early for the award.
Actually, I think Linsey comes off as urbane and fairly sophisticated compared to some of the neanderthals turned loose down there. I find it fairly entertaining watching the Sanford horror slowly roll down hill.
I went to a liberal arts college in Central Florida. Many of our students didn't even wear shoes, much less ties. I doubt more than 10% of the male students knew what an iron was.
As for me, I think I wouldn't mind having Vlad the Impaler's skull around for a conversational piece, although not for dinnerware. I'm not sure if I could work up the courage to enter his tomb to take it though.
Given the state of my penmanship, I never had a single complaint from any of my teachers when I turned in anything typewritten.
what a ghoulish bunch you are. I think maybe you're in the wrong group or maybe need to establish a new one, something like History is Horrible or History gives me Horrors. Halloween is next month.
No, it isn't the first time. It has drawn some criticism in the past. Then, there was that little incident when Bush the Younger decided to read a story to some elementary kids. I think it's pretty clear at this point that the Republicans have decided that whatever Obama does, it's wrong, and that if they keep saying it long enough and loud enough, more people will come to believe it. But constantly singing the Marx Brothers' song from Horse Feathers, "Whatever it is, I'm against it", doesn't constitute much of a platform or any particular reason to vote for them either.
Well, none of us get to choose their mothers, or fathers, but I'm happy enough to say that mine was more in column A. However, I didn't hear him say or read anything he said that the mother in column B should have had any problem with.
well, what they're looking for depends on the person who's being looked at. people have been known to bring in terrorist related materials, not only on computers or disks, of course. however, how many people have actually been caught with any thing of significance, or what percentage that would be of the people who have been checked, is is a different question.
