I really enjoyed this read. Cinderella's stepmother and Guinivere felt fresh to me and the story about the mother becoming a pirate was so wonderful. I did not like the Sibyl story at all and I felt the fairy godmother tale fell flat as well.
Who would like this next? I need to pass it along cause books are meant to be read and not sit gathering dust in my house. Any takers?
I want to be a bookaneer. I admit to some boredom with envrionmental messages though. I can't imagine the YA crowd isn't equally as bored. However, I found it imaginive enough to overlook that aggravation. I so want to be a bookaneer.
I've read this one (and now have aspirations to become a bookaneer!). I'll participate in the discussions when they start up.
I don't know why she came back either. I was with this up until near the end. It just felt lazy to me to take all that marvelous backstory and imagery and tie it up like that. I started suspecting the existence of just one person near the end, but was hoping I was wrong. I wanted something more clever and marvelous.
I did love the story telling in the beginning - the lockpick's hand, the man who foretold the future via stool, the descriptions of the paintings. That was all so wonderful and I can't believ it was finished off by that lazy ending.
It is a continuation and I think you'll find it much more satisfying if you read it close to the second. Such an amazing way of telling a story!
Loved this book when I read it a while back! I strongly suggest reading the second (and final) book while the characters and images are still fresh.
I'm one of the copyless. If some generous person wants to send a copy onto me when they are done, I shall happily continue the good movement and send it on once I've read it.
Ack! My library doesn't carry this one! I may do some hunting on half.com to see if I can get it. And maybe if I can, I'll donate it to the library after I'm done with it.
I liked it. I liked the story, the characters, all of it. The only thing that kind of cracked me up was the descriptions of their outfits which may have been super cool at the time this was set in, but mostly sound tragic by nowadays standards.
Just finished and I loved it! My favorite choice so far. I've adored the "For It All" poem since I read it in one of De Lint's books. It was nice to see it again in this one.
I liked this one as well. The character development was so well done. I was intrigued by Clodagh and her mother and sister. I liked how it was broken into short-ish bits. It kept me going and meshed so well with the mood of the book. I gave it 3 stars. It sucked me in pretty completely, but I felt like I did see the end coming at a point when she's at the convent discussing one of the characters. Also, while I found the story (particularly the mother's story and the mythology) to be haunting, I don't feel like this one will stay with me for a very long time. Still this is my favorite group read so far.
