The stories were hit and miss. Some I loved. Some not so much and the one Sybil not at all.
Glad I finished it at last but need something simpler now.
I finally got to finish this and loved it. The magic. The contrasts of reality. The statisfying hel she gives them. I never knew what to expect next. And the illustrations were gorgeous. Froud is always impressive but the concept was for his work to inspire the story and THAT it did.
Witch-Woman.
Sadly this felt very much like typical witch crying of the times. But I loved this quote:
"For if Issobel Gowdie is not a witch, then we are a mean uncharitable and superstitious people."
and so it still is....
Okay just read story Two - The Wicked Stepmother's Lament.
It is funny. I tend to like retellings of the fairy tales. But this I really enjoyed. To have Cinderella be SO good she really is out of touch with reality and so annoying you WANT to shake her and make her see how it is was an interesting perspective. The Stepmother's frustrations and anger seemed very real to me. And I wanted to take her down too. Also it kept making me flash a bit to Amy Adams in Enchanted...
We took a cruise around the British Isles. Stopped in Cork and Dublin. Went to Newgrange, the Hill of Tara, Blarney Castle and Millworks as well. They played games with our stuff. It would disappear and then reappear on top or in front a day later.
This is one where I really liked the light/dark aspects. It has been a while since I read it. But Yolen adds a layer of unexpectedness I like in her stories
I think even the good ones' mischeviousness can made them bad at times. They sure played games with us in Ireland...
I just started finally. LOVED the first story - Loss, menopause, plumbing and mermaids...who would've thunk?
I have ordered it used as well. And maybe when I finish I can send it to one of you. I am always willing to pass on books when done for the price of postage
I finally finished it this weekend. i was determined! LOL And I will say towards the end it actually seemed to have more of a plot which helped. But still there were soooo many loose ends. I hate loose ends! LOL
But I will say it made me remember the myth of Bloudewedd (Flower Face) which I found fascinating at the time and want to research more. Maybe add something about it to the Magic page of my website.
But that said, I am relieved to have finished the book and more on to something else. LOL
I will say though that I really enjoyed the Chapter where the artist arrives at the mental institution and meets the interesting but mad Mary and her "moral languour" who cannot be tamed.
It also got me pondering on murderers and art. Many serial killers paint and their works are popular. In part mostly for the notariety but also for a mirror into their minds.
Even Patricia Cornwell got into it when she decided that Sickert was Jack the Ripper.
I am enjoying the book - about 1/3 through now. The descriptions are wonderful. But I agree that the characters do no seem to be developed enough, but I do enjoy to multiple POV
