Her writing is beautiful and the story was good, but the she didn't explain why the villain was the way she was, who she was, and why she did what she did. It really didn't bother me much either and I am glad the heroine ends up getting the guy in a way. I have read a short story and another one of her books before this. I highly recommend "The Changeling Sea." I loved it.
McKillip certainly has a way with words. The story so far is beautifully written and her prose is lyrical. It makes every sentence come to life. I feel like I am in the story experiencing everything that the heroine, Rois, is experiencing with all her senses. I haven't finished the book yet and am barely past page 100 (I am taking it slow) but I am enjoying it thoroughly.

Thanks Lia!
Christine wrote: "Yes, DeLint's descriptions of places takes you right there. Right now it is snowing (!!!!!)I'm thinking about rereading those descriptions of Arizona...I do have facebook, I'll look you up:)"
Thank you. Really? Believe it or not, This year was the first year I ever had to experience snow when I was staying with my mom and grandmother in Kentucky. It was bitter-sweet because my grandmother passed away, I only got to build a snowman once, but that was a marvelous experience. I want to read this month's book, but I can't get my hands on it here. I may be able to later on. Well, take care my friend. Salam Christine.

Wow! That makes a lot of sense about Joe and Albin (Still a bit confusing, but I think I get it :P). Thanks for clearing that up for me. That is deep! One thing I loved in the book is the description the author gives of nature. Canada and Arizona sound great! I would love to visit both. Australia is one of the main places I want to go to as well. One of the best books of faery stories I have read is the "Faery Reel." It is amazing. Speaking of Brian Froud, I love his art and his books. I am a huge fan! Trying to find what De Lint book to start on after reading "The Mist" and "New Moon;" since I can't participate in this month's book discussion. I am happy to say that I currently have the book for May's discussion. Huge fan of Patricia McKillip as well :). You know, if you have facebook, you can ad me so that we may keep in touch even though we are far away (half-way across the world, to be precise). Take care my friend. Salam Christine.

I really enjoyed the book. His style of writing is very different from the non-urban fantasy stories I have read, and it does take you to another world where it can be seen in not only the main character's point of view, but through the supporting character's as well. Joe saw faeries as monkeys while Ethenie saw them more as nature spirits. I agree with you Christine, the story is sad knowing that nature is dying, and faery along with it, which does give the book a darker view of urban fantasy. I am also upset that Ethenie's child must leave someday. By the way, do you think it was Joe or Albin who came to her? Or do you think they are the same person. I do not think it was Joe. I think it was Albin because Joe kept talking about faeries like monkies and said he was afraid that if he ever spoke of them, they would leave. What other De Lint book do you recommend, btw?
I just finished it last night. Beautiful story. I really loved it. So what did you all think? What was the most interesting aspect of the book? Again, will not spoil until people start discussing the book :P. The characters were great in my opinion.. My favorites is Sharleen. She has got attitude! Well, guess there is nothing to do now but wait. Take care all :). Salam my friends.
I am now on page 170 something. So far, this books is really good. It is now starting to get into the more mythical part of the book and not just about the life of the heroine. This is the first Charles De Lint book I have ever read even though I have five or so of his books. The descriptive writing he uses paints a lovely picture in the mind of the reader yet leaves a lot to their interpretation, which I like. Not going to spoil this until we discuss it at the end of the month :).
Odette wrote: "Many thanks to Lia, Brittany and Claire for getting back to me about your book choices! We now have reading selections through the end of June:May: Winter Rose by Patricia A. McKillip

Yay! I have "Winter Rose" here! That is great! I love Patricia McKillip. I read "The Changeling Sea" and loved it. That's great, so I will do my best to participate next month as well.
Yeah, I am on page 81. So far, it is getting very interesting. Nothing really important or exciting has happened yet; just strange things.
Sounds great! I would love to participate, but unfortunately, I can't get my hands on this book here in Saudi Arabia :(. Sorry, all. I would love to participate more often, but it all depends on my luck with the selected books each month. I am writing down the titles you are all picking so that in the future, I might borrow them from a library and read them insha Allah. I went to the book shop today and was very surprised to see that they had brought in a Robin McKinley book, "Beauty." I bought that as well as a few other books. I don't know whether it is one on the reading list for this group, but I am deffinitely looking forward to it being a huge McKinley fan. Well, salam my friends :).
I am on chapter 4 already. I must say that I am thoroughly enjoying this. I love the descriptions the author uses and how not much is known about the heroine in the beginning, but as you continue reading, everything starts to make sense and things about the heroine's past are revealed. Being an artist myself, I can relate to how Ethane feels at times and understand what she is going through having trouble with her art and "inner landscape" :) . It sort of inspires me to paint something mythical as well. I am looking forward to seeing what the main plot of the story is about.
I am in. I started reading it already and am on chapter three. I have never read it before, but so far, I love it. I am glad that there is finally a book that I can participate in discussing. It is hard for me to find the books on the reading list here in Saudi Arabia because the choices are limited in the book stores and it is hard to special order books here if they are not in the store's system. I brought this with me from the U.K when I visited there along with other Charles De Lint books. This is actually the first De Lint book I will be reading. I heard his Moonheart novel is amazing as well. Well, I am really looking forward to this! Take care everyone. Salam my friends.
I love your list! I have a lot of these books in my collection. I have either read them, am still reading them, or want to read them. I haven't read the onion girl by charles de lint. However, I would love to do so. Take care my friends. Salam.
Kay wrote: "Welcome back, Reem. I'm on facebook, but there are several Reem Kattans so I'm not sure which is you!"Oh, I am the one with the Tifa Lockhart picture. A character from FF VII. computer animated girl with black hair?
Salam everyone! I am back (for a little while until I start my job anyway!). How is everyone? I hope you are all fine. Well, I am back home in Saudi Arabia and am very happy to say that I at least have a few of the books that are on the Endicott reading list, so I should be able to participate in some of the discussions insha Allah. Btw, is anyone here on facebook? Add me. You will be able to see a lot more of my book collection there on the social reader application. There is way too much to add here! Take care my friends. Salam.
Oh, I love the lord of the rings type elves! Not sure about the ones from myth. Aren't they supposed to be mischievous? LOL. Do you guys believe in fairies by the way? I have a very open mind, but there is not enough evidence to prove their existence.

Thank you Odette. I know. I have some Terri Windling and Ellen Datlow books like "the faery reel." I never read any of the fairy tale anthology series yet. I will definitely write that on my list of things to read though. Well take care miss odette and everyone else in this group. Salam Odette.
Hi everyone. I am very excited to be here. I am a huge fan of mythology, folklore, fantasy, and fairy tales as well as children's and YA books. I have been a huge fan of endicott studios ever since I discovered it. I was thrilled to find this reading group. I am currently reading "the pink fairy book" by Andrew Lang as well as "Twilight" to see what all the hype is about. I hope people will find interesting reads here. I have! I have been taking notes of what I wanted to read. Well, salam my friends.
