I'm just gonna go with authors...and not necessarily in any particular order:1. J.R. Ward (Black Dagger Brotherhood series)
2. Charlaine Harris (Southern Vampire series)
3. Laurell K. Hamilton (despite her flaws; Merry Gentry)
4. Patricia Briggs (Mercedes Thompson series)
5. Cassandra Clare (The Mortal Instruments. It's young adult and has mixed reviews, but I really loved it.)

I have to second the Anita Blake/Micah encounter in Narcissus in Chains from way back at the beginning of this thread..It's been years since I read it, but I swear I can almost recite bits of it.And my most recent favorite was from Embrace the Night, when Cassie and Pritkin get THIS CLOSE to getting it on! Oh God, that was pure torture!!! My husband had to say my name about ten times before I realized he was trying to talk to me in the middle of that scene...
Yes, it plummeted for a long time. The last couple have just started to faintly, faintly resemble the Guilty Pleasures days...I do have to give LKH her due on one thing, though: the woman can certainly stretch out ONE scene over the course of a 500+ page novel...
This makes me feel a bit like a bully, but I just want to kick the ever-loving $h!te out of Nathaniel from the Anita Blake series. Seriously? Who has purple eyes and ANKLE-LENGTH hair? It's just ridiculous.
True Blood inspired my husband and another male friend to pick up the Sookie Stackhouse series, and so far they're enjoying it. Besides that, it's mostly limited to mocking. :-)
I loved Fafever. I got it and a few other PNR books for Christmas and had them all read in a few days, then was very sad when I had nothing left. :-) Dreamfever can't come out soon enough!
Gina: yes, Bit the Jackpot is part of the Vegas Vampires series. I disliked it for all the exact reasons you mentioned.
I just finished Bit the Jackpot by Erin McCarthy; I was disappointed. The characters were all pretty flat, and the plot was...well, what plot?
This is one of those books that has an extremely off-putting cover. I do have it, though, and after this thread I'm going to read it. :-)
I'm curious as to why people seem to have a hard time getting in to Harrison's books. Personally, I think they're fantastic, and they're probably my favorite PNR series. Kim Harrison is just an amazing author who tells amazing stories, and the characters in that series are so near and dear to my heart. The thing I love most about Harrison is that she doesn't have a formula for her books like many other authors do (exposition, introduction of conflict, sexual tension, sex, violence, sex, resolution, etc.); she has all the same elements, really, but puts them together in a fresh way each time. Granted, some of the books I like better than others, but that's to be expected. I've read DWW at least five times, I'm sure.
To those struggling, try to make it through. It's worth it.
I basically read both Darkfever and Bloodfever in a sitting. Loved them! I haven't read the Highlander series, so this was my first taste. I really enjoy Mac as the heroine; she has something that a lot of heroines are missing. And Jericho--damn! I just want to reach through the pages and rip his clothes off!
I can't wait for Faefever, and I'm trying to find the first book to the Highlander series.
Natale: Vampire, Interrupted was good, but I felt a little cheated because I'd figured it out from the get-go. I really liked The Accidental Vampire; looking forward to reading the rest of the books!
Based on this thread, I went out and got Darkfever and Bloodfever from the library yesterday. Looking forward to reading!
Thanks for the warning, Melissa. I'm about to start the first Lily Bard. I doubt I'll read all of them; I was just desperate for something from the library.
I'm finally reading Lynsay Sand's Argenaeu Vampires series, due to numerous recommendations here. I like! Read The Accidental Vampire yesterday and am about half-way through Vampire, Interrupted today. It's nice that each one is a stand-alone novel.I'm also reading Charlaine Harris's other series (Lily Bard and Aurora Teagarden); I liked Sookie so much that I'm hoping these are just as good.
Do it--you probably won't regret it (wait, not give it up. I meant read The Harlequin! Many of us felt that it revived hope in the series.)
