390 Oh man, the old woman at the diner freaked me out. Between this one, 2012, Zombietown, Fourth Kind and the new Tron, I'm feeling very happy about my paranormal & SF movie viewing for the future. Now I just need some fantasy...
Young Adult?? (27 new)

390 When I was a kid, I read "adult" books. Now that I'm chronologically an adult, I read YA. Give me another couple years and I'll be fine with picture books.

Oh wait, actually, I just read Patricia Briggs' Mercy Thompson graphic novel HOMECOMING and loved it. So I guess I'm already there.

390 Thanks for the recommendation to hit On the Prowl. I LOVE the Mercy Thompson books, but stumbled on Alpha & Omega, which I really wanted to like because a not-alpha heroine sounded good to me. I felt like I was missing something, and now I know what :)

390 Re: Crazed scientists.

Yikes! I was just helping a friend plot her new story and we made the scientist crazy evil! Back to the drawing board :) (Even though crazy evil is such fun to write.)

Nalini Singh's Psy/Changling stories have some not crazy scientist types.

As for open/closed societies, I like how Patricia Briggs in the Mercy Thompson books rides the line between what regular people know -- or think they know -- and what they don't know at all about vamps, weres & whatnot.

390 So cool to see everybody's faves posted end to end. Ann, I ADORE the old skool SF&F covers. At UBS, my hand always drifts toward the Vallejo-style covers :)

One from that era:
A Princess of Mars (Barsoom, #1)

390 I like them both, and I read 'em much faster than they write 'em :)

I agree, though, it can be a matter of mood. I read Ward when I'm feeling nihilistic and Feehan when I'm being moody. Kinda like the difference between Tool and Evanescence.

390 Isn't that funny, because I was totally fine with stealing my mom's romances, but I'm not necessarily okay with it going the other way around :)

It's bad enough when you find out your family reads your blog... Eesh.

390 Just started Lori Foster's MY MAN, MICHAELMy Man, Michael (SBC Fighters, #4) which was recommend somewhere in this group. Really liking it. For some reason I always like the socially awkward, overly tall, misfit heroines. And I am NOT projecting. Much.

390 I just finished SHIVER by Maggie Stiefvater.
Shiver
Oh man. Beautiful story. And perfect for this time of the season as the weather is changing. You can feel the breath of winter on the back of your neck.

390 I took a roll on random.org which pulled message 7 Michelle M as my ARC winner.

Thanks for the feedback, everybody. I just finished the prequel teaser a couple nights ago and it's off to the editor on Monday.

390 Yay, Stephanie, for taking good ideas wherever you find them! I think "reading about love all the time," as you put it, can only be a good thing. Yes, we all know there's more to life than love, but why should love be a huge part of our days?

Even in most of the hard-core alpha male possessive jerk stud stories, it's usually not until the male learns to trust, light up and communicate that he wins his woman. And most of the time, it's the characters completing their inner arcs that makes them "worthy" of love.

390 I found her through a two-fer with Shelley Laurensten called When He Was Bad. And it was very good :)

Cynthia Eden also does great special guest blog months. She did 30 Days of Demons earlier in the summer and in October she's doing Month of Monsters. Very fun and great insights into how a lot of different authors use the same pieces to come up with wildly different stories.
390 There's a scene in Jeri Smith-Ready's WICKED GAME where the heroine has fallen into bed with her vampire boyfriend and it's very touch and go whether he's going to make love to her or eat her. It's arousing in that all the heroine's senses are at their peak, including fear for her life. I thought it was hot and very dangerous.

Er, I don't need to clarify that it's fantasy, right?

390 Hmm, now that Ann brings up non PNR... I was looking at my shelf and I kind of thing many of my rom-coms have stronger-than-the-male females. I just wasn't so quick to notice because it's not a kick-butt strength, but a kick-the-abusive-old-boyfriend's-butt kind of strength :) Yeah, I'm thinking Jennifer Crusie. In those stories, it's often the guys who aren't strong enough to let go of their mental hangups.

In a lot of the PNR, many of the heroines are as emotionally/mentally damaged as their alpha males counterparts, so it's like they're starting from a equally weak position, if you see what I mean.

390 One of my favorite quotes from an author is Stephen King saying, paraphrased: "I am the Big Mac and fries of literature." I thought that just so nicely slid (like a well-oiled fry, lol) criticism off his back.

390 Making the short an add-on rather than required
reading

This makes sense. (Making notes to self.) I too have missed anthology stories that bridge the time gap between books and I flailed to keep up. I liked that the Firefly comics that came between the TV show and the movie were standalones. They deepened character but weren't vital to understanding the world.

I just found it on my GR wishlist shelf Yay! :)

390 Seduced By Shadows (Marked Souls, #1)
My debut urban fantasy romance is out in October and I have a few ARCs left. I've gotten some great suggested reads here so hopefully I can give a good read back :)

Respond here for a chance to win. And I have a question, if you'd like to answer: Do you like free reads from an author between books? If so, what kind? Stories from the world of the series, or something different? How long? Can you suggest a few you've particularly liked?

Thanks for checking out this post. I'll have random.org pull a winner next Friday at midnight.

390 Interesting. I started a thread awhile back about how I'd heard a few complaints that the rise of kick-ass heroines has emasculated heroes everywhere. I thought that was unfair. Glad to see somebody is willing to mix it up.

Dara Joy's Ritual of Proof is a futuristic where the heroine takes the traditionally masculine role.

390 A futuristic, hmm? I'll have to try some of the earlier ones while I wait. Thanks for the recommendation.

390 If you can't find the protectors, at least those risque covers are an interesting conversation piece. And potentially fun stories you can post back here :)
