3551 I would also recommend books by Paul Volponi, such as Rucker Park Set Up, Response, Black & White, and Hurricane Song. He used to teach kids in Rikers, so there is an authenticity to the writing and the stories that I'm sure incarcerated people will identify with.

3551 I'd suggest Lauren Myracle's Peace Love and Baby Ducks. Susane Colasanti and Sarah Dessen are great too, for lighter, funnier stuff.

3551 Hi Everyone,
I work at Penguin, one of Laurie's publishers, and I love that there's such a robust discussion going on about her books, especially Speak. 2009 marks the 10th Anniversary of it's publication, so it's great timing that you are all discussing it. Her new book, Wintergirls, is coming out in March, and she considers it her darkest and most emotional since Speak. I have a few advanced readers copies that I'd be happy to give to those who want one. Please direct message me here though GoodReads or email me at lisa.degroff@us.penguingroup.com and I'd be happy to send one along - while supplies last, that is!

Thanks and happy reading!
