3551 "She wouldn't hurt you," Giddon said. "Do you understand that? But if someone else were to hurt you, Lady Katsa would likely hurt that person."
Katsa put her fork down and looked at Giddon. She hadn't expected this kindness from him.
"Do you understand?" Giddon asked the girl.
The child nodded. She peeked at Katsa
"Perhaps you'd like to shake hands," Giddon said.
The girl paused. Then she leaned and held her hand out to Katsa. Something welled up inside Katsa, something she couldn't quite name. A sort of gladness at this little creature who wanted to touch her.

Graceling by Kristen Cashore (tied for my fav book of the year with Hunger Games....both have great prequels/sequels coming out this fall.)

3551 I read it a few years ago but I'll try to reread it this month too!

3551 I really liked both Alaska and Paper Towns....I would say that Paper Towns is more like Katherines than Alaska is.....Green was also a part of a book called "Let it Snow" which consists of 3 short stories by different authors that intertwine. Kinda fun as well :)
Nick or Norah? (10 new)

3551 There's Naomi and Ely's No Kiss List by the same authors as N&N. Another fun dual perspective read.

As far as N&N, I really like them both.I feel like Nick's was a bit more surface but that might be b/c Norah's seemed more jaded. I think that the different styles really worked with the characters.

3551 There is a June 2008 update that says Midnight Sun is her next project. She wasn't going to do it but then she changed her mind. She actually IS going to finish it and hopes to have it published. I can't imagine any publisher in their right mind saying no!

3551 I really enjoy all of Green's novels. I like the balance between humor/sarcasm/wit and serious issues/plot. The dialogue is fun and the characters are interesting. I feel like there could be a spectrum of Green's novels with Looking for Alaska being the most "in depth" (for lack of a better term,) Katherines being the most "fun," and Paper Towns somewhere in the middle. As I said, I enjoy them all but I think that Katherines is the one that I would re-read the most!

3551 I feel like the "extras" add to the story. The footnotes were humorous (the venn diagram depicting interesting vs. celebrity living people) and helpful (language translations.) I'm not exactly a math person but I can see the point of having it there. I also liked the anagrams!

3551 Hassan is fabulous!!!! I want to go on a road trip with him! I like the wit that he an Colin exchange in their friendship. It was also nice to see a bit more of his "serious" side throughout the novel.

There wasn't a character that I thought was poorly written. There were characters that I wouldn't want to spend a whole lot of time around (TOC) but that's how they're meant to be :)

3551 I love, love, love this book! I laughed through the entire thing. The friendship between Hassan and Colin was great. I really liked the possibilities that the ending left open.

3551 When this book was first released some of the reviewers didn't like the inclusion of the footnotes and math concepts. Did you find them distracting? Would the story have been better/worse/the same without them?

3551 Do you feel that this story is realistic? Do the characters behave like real teens? Can young adults relate?

3551 What do think about the characters in Katherines? Do you have a favorite? Was there one that you just did not like?
Oct 31, 2008 11:18PM

3551 Have you read either of Green's other novels (Looking for Alaska and Paper Towns?) If so, what are your thoughts about how Katherines compares?
Oct 31, 2008 11:16PM

3551 Overall, what did you think of this book?

3551 What are your first thoughts of Katherines?

3551 And why her? Why did he single out Miss Foley? It seems like he went to more effort to target her....maybe I missed something but I didn't get that.
Oct 25, 2008 08:35PM

3551 I agree...and it's scary to think that there actually are people like that in the world. They may know on some level that it's wrong but they still can justify it (it being whatever it is that they're doing)
Oct 25, 2008 08:33PM

3551 I think that schools would include it. As a middle school LMS I don't think that we would use it but I could see the high school using it. As I said, perhaps not as a whole class book but as a book to chose from on a reading list or for a literature circle.
Oct 25, 2008 03:57PM

3551 I'd be willing to lead for Katherines....I'm so pleased we went with that book. John Green is fabulous :)

3551 I had a hard time with this one. I loved the writing style but not with the story.

The father was my favorite character. I also loved seeing him develop. My heart broke for him as he tried to figure out how to have a relationship with his son. He just seemed so lost in life.
